Here is a mystery. According to the manufacturing plate this car came through through in colour 2B. According to Ford, the Gran Torino was not offered in 2B. So.......what have we here?

I agree. Only because I have one. Do any other members have a 1976 that came in 2B?

I was always under the impression that 2B red was only offered as a standard color through the 1975 model year, and Ford dropped it in the Torino line for '76. The only 2B red for '76 was the special Starsky and Hutch edition, then that color was standard and listed on the door tag. But the DSO on the door tag of one of those cars would also be 6 digits long with "0022" being listed as the last 4 digits. That tag does not show the extra DSO numbers. If the car was special ordered with 2B paint in '76, then the color would be blank on the tag?

I'm not trying to prove its anything other than what it is. I think it slipped through the cracks. However, it is an interesting abnormality.

A special order color would also make the sight shields silver in color, (the bumper filler panels), instead of color matching. It is strange that 2B is listed as the color for a '76 model, without the S&H package. Maybe that is not the original door sticker, and someone had a reproduction made?

Doug, interesting theory. I have no clue on the history of my car. I don't believe the sticker was reproduced or altered. My next step is to clean all of the gunk off of the block and check for a numbers match
A lot can happen between 1976 and now.

What started this was finding the door tag. It didn't hit me right away that my car was something of an anomaly. The picture shows the original red on the firewall. That red is in the trunk and under both door panels. I took some fingernail polish remover to a small and hidden by the bumpers area on the filler panes. They are 2B aswell. Unfortunately ,the build sheet is not behind the seat. One good note. The engine numbers do match. When the report comes back, we will know.

Please post the results of the Marti once you get it.  The Marti should show how many others came in that colour, which should help resolve if you car is a one off, or if the 2B red really was available (even though sources say it was not).

so ,  The guy I got my 74 from told me in 76 he ,( or his dad)  had ordered a 2-B red two door non S-K  and it came thru with the Starsky and Hutch stripe  , un be noun to him ,  this was Michigan , so I'm thinking  the color was again available as stock color  in 76.  and  the report  should  show more than the  2000 + special paint jobs .

The only issue I have is that all special paint jobs left no code in the paint code block.  I'm waiting for the Marti Report. That should solve this mystery.

FWIW the starsky cars were white then the red was painted over it... the pigments in the reds back then would often "bleed" through white

So it looks like any special order colour would be left blank on the door tag and it would have a six digit DSO.

The 6639 is the special order number on that particular vehicle. 71 is the two digit ordering district.

it's been suggested that different plants did different things with the tags

The Marti report is in. It would seem that a few hundred 1976 Gran Torinos were produced and offered in 2B. I wonder how many of these red ones survived.

I wonder if after the S&H Torinos started production, that they just made the 2B paint a standard color for the rest of the Torino run?

It looks like 588 of them did make it out. They're not a special order. Just a red Gran Torino.

So what I suspected is true, There were actual 2B cars made in 1976.  I think Doug might be on to something. Maybe After the run of S&H cars, they wanted to use up the red paint?  Weren' t the S&H cars all Chicago built cars too?

Thanks for sharing the report!  You have one rare and cool Torino.
