    Posted: 03-November-2018 at 9:34AM
Ok, tech question--

My '72 frame does not have the same transmission crossmember mount that my '73 frame does. Am I missing a mount, or does it bolt to the bottom of the frame? There are two holes on each rail, so I'm assuming I need a different mount for the '72 frame. it would be longer on each end--the '73 one bolts onto- of a welded-on plate. Am I seeing this correctly? If so, what transmission mount DO I need to find, or do I use the one from the '73 but get extensions? Not sure on this.......

Thanks, all---

yes there are 2 different cross member styles. i've only ever owned 72 & 73's and they've all been the long cross member that bolts directly to the frame, never the had the one that bolts to brackets on the inside of the frame rails.

you have a 73 with the frame tab cross member? i'd call it a 1974+ style for clarity

but are you looking for the cross member itself or a transmission mount?

Ok thanks.

So, I need a long cross-member, for what bolts to use, for a '72 gts. This is the left side for my current '73 gts. This is the frame that was originally under my '73. The '72 frame is going under as the replacement.

OK got ya, this has been discussed before swapping frames & cross members etc

if you don't turn up the long style there's no reason you can't weld on the extra length to what you have, IIRC yours is identical to the other except for the length. there's a thread with pics in it somewhere, i can't even find my pics unless ... nope already looked there

or surgically remove the brackets from your frame and weld them onto the new frame

it's not that hard, just grind the welds but not the brackets

I thought about grinding them off, but another forum member is interested in the frame for his car, so I'm not going to grind anything off unless he decides either not to take it, or tak just the back half. Otherwise, I'll need to know what cars would be the donors.....

Thanks,

Thanks :)

I should probably ask (now that I found the crossmember forums)..... The '73 was originally 351c (q code), but previous owner installed a 429/460. I'll probably go back to a 351c, since I have one for it, but may still build the 429..... Both will be on stands in the meantime. Is the crossmember the same for either engine?

I may just end up grinding the welds to pull the brackets.....seems like the best choice

Yes, the cross member is the same for both engines.  I think it might be easier to cut the brackets off the '73 frame than to find a longer cross member.  If you do find a longer cross member, here is a thread that shows how to make up some mounting bolts:

Use a cutoff wheel and cut the welds. Take lots of measurements.

Other option is to make/get made a couple plates (Similar to the pieces for a 73-up frame) that you can bolt to the frame and will attach to the existing crossmember.
Make 2 bolt holes to attach to the frame in each to spread the load.

a couple heavy L brackets would do the trick,

let the trans & mount do the locating and 2 self tappers on each side would be enough to drive it to get it welded if need be

YAAY! My crossmember arrived in the mail today:). I just have to re-shape on one the bolt holes. I guess someone had to torch off the head of a bolt and it uglier up one of the holes. I'll fill it it with weld then grind to reshape.

Now, question on the 'clip-nut''. I saw the other post on how to make a replacement......but my question---- does the original retaining nut/clip happen to be the same thing that was used to hold the front bumper mounts onto the '73+ front frame horns? If so, I have a couple to use :) if not,well..... I still have a couple.

I am not sure if anyone has a picture of an intact setup, but this is the best I could come up with.  There are some more pics in this thread:

Ah, ha!! I suspected as such, and there is the answer in that other forum--- the nut-clip is indeed the same thing as the front of '73 for the impact bumper mounts!! I have two of those so I'm good!! Yaaay!!!
