I'd like to know what, if any differences there are in the blocks between the 72-86 300 and the 87-95 300. My brother in law has a rebuilt one pulled out of an 80's F150 and I was wondering why the block wouldn't be compatible with the newer generation.

Knock sensor fitting maybe?

I think it's when they went to EFI, so the newer engines (may) not have a fuel pump mounting provisions.
As far as I remember, no roller cam, so that's not the issue.

Everything I can find points to the fuel pump issue.

do the newer ones have a distributor location? if not it may need to have a crank triggered system

I have seen some cool stuff done with these.

I will look when I get home, but I think the original Ford Off Highway Parts book has a section on the Ford Six's.

The link below is to a well documented 300 six, using 3 cut up Boss 302 (Cleveland) heads welded together to make a Boss 300 inline six.

Super cool, a bit crazy, but cool nonetheless.

I pulled a head off of a '87 Econoline van (FI motor) years ago to replace the warped head on my F150.  I know it has a smaller, heart-shaped combustion chamber. I wound up using the whole top of the motor, minus the FI intake.  I used the split exhaust manifolds and pipes up to the cats for a true dual exhaust setup, a Offy 4-bbl intake and Clifford cam.  That thing would roll out of the gate in 1st like nobody's business.  GREAT torque engines.
