Seeing that the future of parts were and are dwindling and quality was suspect, was the exact reasons I converted to larger Crown Vic. Getting larger diameter rotors was a big plus

Yeah, It's a Hybrid...It burns gas and tires.

Ditto, I also aim for an easier source of parts when I upgrade something. My old 73 Ranchero I used an early 70's spindle to get the bigger rotor(it may be the same spindle as that 71 LTD). But I had a bracket welded to the spindles, to mount an aftermarket caliper. I never got to drive it, as that was after the 302 engine had died and I had already sold that to fund building a 4.11 LS rear chunk. I put JFZ calipers on it, with huge 2" pistons, so it would have been interesting. That was the 80's, now it's better to choose a late model OEM caliper etc, for much easier servicing.

Reviving this brake thread again, I'm sorry I didn't find the one with the project that cut down rotors to mount late model hats.

I'm wondering how close the fit is for a 90's Crown Vic rotor, when placed onto a cut down 1974-79 small rotor(5x4.5" bolt circle)? I recall someone did that, but I can't remember what was needed to mount and locate the calipers.

The old 72 11.72" rotor is listed with Mac at the moment, but I think long term those will always be very hard to come by. If the project to cut down a 74-79 rotor and use on a matching 1974-79 spindle will work with minor trouble to use the CV rotors, I'd prefer that method over the rare early rotors.

Can someone point me to where that was done before, cutting down a rotor to allow a Crown Vic rotor to go onto that?

Thanks for pointing me back to that thread. I reviewed it again, and I see that the rotor sizes used are tough to fit inside of most smaller wheels. That thread is for rotors that require 16" wheels or larger, the 12.44" rotors are a step larger than the 70's 12" rotors, which were actually 11.72" in size.

I'm aiming for my Ranchero that has 14" front wheels now, and I want to buy the similar Rally wheels, in the 15" size. So a rotor to fit those needs to be just under 12.0" actual size. I learned long ago with custom brakes I did for my 98 Mercury SUV, that a wheel has to be about 3.25" bigger than the rotor, rounded to the next larger size. So my 16" SUV wheels could handle a 12.75" rotor, actually 12.90" for the calipers I used.

So I looked at other possible rotors. The closest I found was the 2001-2005 Sport Trac front rotors, which have the same offset as the CV(1998-2002) rotors others have adapted. The Sport Trac rotors are 12.0", which very likely won't fit inside a 15" wheel. That size would be extremely close, I am familiar with those rotors, having swapped them onto my 99 Explorer and finding two stock 15" wheels that barely went on to roll it around. I actually used stock 99 Limited wheels for my work use, which are 16x7" sized.

So it looks like a tough thing to get a bigger rotor with 15" wheels, other than the stock rotors of the early 70's, or else a 5x5" pattern from the later 70's cars.

I might later on get to test fit my 15" rear wheels from my Ranchero, onto the 99 Explorer front brakes I have from the Sport Trac. Those 15" wheels are an unknown brand, and as close as the fit will be, any other brand would have to be actually tried on to verify they could clear the calipers.
