Was there ever a 74-76 Montego built with no A/C from the factory ?
Would like to clean up the firewall on a car that isn’t running the A/C anymore , get rid of all the unnecessary lines from the evaporator. Thank you kindly

I'm sure there was, and the Gran Torinos of similar years will have parts or picture examples of what you are trying to do. I have one 73 which has no AC, a Nevada car even, which I will be adding AC to at some point. The firewall has different holes in it for cars with or without AC, plus wiring changes etc, in the dash.

Well that’s great information ! I will have to
place a wanted ad for that inner firewall housing when I get to that part of the project . It just looks so much better to have that area decluttered if it’s not going to be used ! Thank you for your response

If you definitely won't use the AC, it shouldn't be too hard to fill the existing AC holes, and install the heater only blower parts. I have both versions in my two 73's, when I get to the AC task I'll look at whether the heat only parts can be reused. Was your car's AC system complete, are the main AC housings/units intact etc? I have not looked into what different parts will be required for mine to put the AC in, but I can presume at the least, the AC unit just inside and outside the firewall are needed.

IIRC i got my heat only plenum from a Montego, but the climate control systems are common between all the intermediates. the easiest way to get it done is to fabricate a transfer duct to replace the evaporator housing and leave the rest of it alone, if that would work for you? one of mine i did, i cut the existing evap housing down to about 3" height off the firewall and made a flat cover to seal it back up. after putty & paint it looked like it belonged just fine

That’s a great idea , I don’t need to reinvent the wheel and with the new products available these days it’s amazing what you can make ! I love panel bond !!! I imagine while I have the motor out of the car that would be the time to work up close and personal on that area , give the whole engine bay a refresh !!! Do you happen to have a picture of your finished product you could send for inspiration?
Thank you

That's a very good idea. I think I've seen such a picture like that of a really short AC box in a car.

John replied that he has everything for the conversion a few replies up. Not aure if you saw that or not. He is a magician with these kinds of jobs. Somewhere in the forum I had seen pictures of what someone made to cover the area where the original evap core housing used to be. It looked decent and was functional.

Yes, they made non-A/C Montegos. Here is a thread that might help you out and a pic of Rockatansky's firewall A/C delete plate:

That link is and will be invaluable when I get to that point , and yes I saw the offer of parts , I will contact him on those parts . I really like the clean shaved look on that yellow car ! So just another question to clarify year interchangeability, are 72-76 firewall , main tub of the car pretty much the same , Ford - Mercury ?

I didn't mean to sound pompous. Thought you might have missed the post. John is my go-to for parts.
As far as body tubs being the same, I think 72 and 73 share more aheet metal than the later models. The interior may be close. My car has buckets and door panels from 74 or later. I have sport door panels that need to be freshened up a bit and arm rests replaced. I have many parts stashed that I have bought from people here and when I swap out parts the old ones will get me some of my money back.

everything down the middle is basically the same from 1972 to 1979, frames, core supports, firewall, floors, beds / trunks .... just some detail differences for seat belt mounts and the support structure i wish i had a pic of the transfer duct evap housing job, that pic
above is my current project frozen in time, i made a patch from heavy
aluminum and i'm installing the heat only plenum that i gleaked so long ago. in this case the
extensive work to change it all out is merely a side note due to the extensive rust i had to
deal with in the cowl. the heater motor bulge is a metal can, now that i
think about it a small stainless 'kitchen equipment' style bowl would
look near original?
Yes the blower fan is contained in the interior plenum assy |
