tried hooking it up as prescribed (in line with the power wire to the coil) and at a 1000 rpm idle it sits at 3000 rpm... It swings around almost normally when revving (right to 6000 when revving to 3000 rpm).
Any thoughts? (especially how to fix)
Crane HI6 ignition with PS92 coil and MSD billet dizzy...
TIA,
Jim

Jim,
I don't know the Crane ignition, but like more electronic ignitions it could be that the Crane fires more than one time on a single pulse. In this case there's not much you can easily do . There is a way though, and that is to use an optical or magnetic sensor on the crancshaft pulley, and generate (with an electronic booster) a current pulse of about 1 Amp. trough the factory tach. That should do the job. Maybe you could first test the tach (to be sure it's working) with a small transformer, outputcurrent 1 Amp. , voltage not very important, a single rectifier diode. At 60 Hz it would result in a tacho reading of 3600/8=450 rpm. If you need a schematic diagram of the test setup, I'm glad to help you. Flip. ps Are you sure the tach is originally for an eight cyl. engine? Edited by Flipvs - 13-January-2008 at 10:54AM |

I'm scratching my head.. sell the crane and go MSD :) Actually, what year is your cluster? 74 or older?

The tach actually came out of a 1974 Torino (351C), would that be the problem? IIRC they had points and a resistor in the wire..
FWIW, I will never put another MSD on the car, three is enough..
I have access to two 1976 tachs, worth trying them?

If it comes out a '74 351, that's ok. Or your tach isn't working properly, or the ignition is causing the problem. Trying the other tach is always an option. At least you will be sure about the status of the one you're using at the moment. ps Have you any idea of the current flow through the coil ? It could be that it's much too high for the tach. In that case there would be a simple solution, of shunting the tach with a resistor. Maybe you can measure the current flow, I can compare it with my tach-current. Maybe that could give the solution to the problem. Flip. |

Yes, electric current. Measure it in one of the coil-leads. (about 3 to 7 amps I guess) Flip |
