Can anyone help me get this to work with the Crane ignition/MSD dizzy? Last time I tried to get it to work it either shut the car off or was swinging around like mad.
Thanks!
Jim

Hey Jim, I had the same problem. The factory tach shorted out my HEI or something and shut the car off. I bypassed it by using a monster tach with a shift light and mounted it in front of the factory tack. I talked to the guy who builds my Aurora HEI box and he said some resistors and diodes probably have to be used to make the old tach work with new ignition systems.

Yeah, I have an aftermarket tack that I've been using for years and years, but I so want to have the factory piece working for lots of reasons including the stealth factor.

There has to be an MSD tach adapter you can use.

Hey Jim, I was thinking that a shift light could be built into the rear view mirror for the stealth look. You can put a bank of LED's around it or use a plastic mirror and build them in. Maybe there's a shop that can change the guts of the factory tach with new components.

I was going to do what you said, but hide the shiftlight in the drivers side vent.

I'd actually like to hide one in the "Low Fuel Economy" warning light that is on the Sport cluster. There is plenty of space for 4-6 LED's in there and it should be bright enough to get my attention..
I think I tried the tach adapter when I actually still had the MSD and it didn't work. Maybe it's time for a call to the Crane tech line.. (I just hate that route)
Thanks!
Jim

Hello Jim,
If you have a sportscluster with Tach, the Tach has to be in series with the 12v supply of your HEI-ignition. (Or in series with the + lead of the coil, this will work for sure.) No matter wich of the two wires is used as input. The factory tach has a built-in transformer, and reacts only on current changes. Current direction is not important. If you do so, it will work properly ! I've installed in my Torino an electronic ignition, and the tach is working perfect. Success, Flip. Edited by Flipvs - 20-December-2007 at 3:38AM |

Hi,
Yes I still have it. But first I have to apologize for not answering your last mail. I changed my settings, and I had to activate my account. There was a big problem, it did not work! After a few weeks I stopped trying. So after a few months I tried again with a new username, and it seemed the procedure was changed, because it worked ! Thanks, Flip. |

Flip, How much do you want for the Speedometer? I can trade you a whole cluster which is still original if you prefer. Can you send some pictures of it?

Hi Jim, I was wondering if the tach works ? I upgraded my Torino with a sportscluster, and everything is working, but not the "low economy" light ! I'm looking for the vacuum-switch or whatever sending-unit it uses. Can you help me ? Thanks, Flip. |

I'm away from the car for the holidays but I'll post if it works. As for the low fuel economy, I believe any vacuum switch can be made to work. I was looking at one from a GM product but can't remember the part #.. Perhaps an internet search for Vacuum switch may turn something up. (I pulled my cluster from a parts car and forgot to get the sensors) You'd probably need something that triggers around 8psi or vacuum or thereabouts

Hi Jim,
The vacuumswitch must trigger around -0.4 PSI, the vacuum range is from 0 to -0.8 PSI. I have already a vacuummeter installed, but I cannot open it for building a sensor in it without destroying the case of it ... I'll have to keep on searching or invent something myself. Still working on it, but if you find something.....! Thanks, Flip. |

Hi Chris,
I send you a picture of my cluster with the KPH speedo. I'm more interested to trade it for some small Torino things I need and are hard to get here in Holland. I also have the (perfect working!) clock for that cluster! If you are interested, I'll make a list of things I need. Flip. |

I found one that can be adjusted down to 1psi, close but no cigar. (One thing to remember is that at 1psi vacuum, you are pretty much Wide Open Throttle anyway)

Jim-
A suggestion...I have been tossing the ideaback and forth...as Paul PSquare for pics on his dash setup in his Cougar, really nice, but he used the flat panel, not the torino sport cluster setup.
I plan on honestly yanking out my factory gages. I have spent too much time fighting the stuff, and honestly, I want something much more precise that that of my 35+ year old gages.
I plan on leaving the spedo, but replacing everything else. My biggest obstical has been the wanton destruction of a cluster housing...I have a couple 72 clusters, and they arn't exactly growing on trees.
I have thought basically by removing all the small gages, and leaving the factory tach and spedo alone, and attaching the gages into the small pod openings, it works pretty good.
I plan on autometer stuff, but being as braoke as I am, I have picked up a couple EQUIS units from a local parts store...still need to get around to installing the things, just need to get over my hesitation and install them.
I had a seperate post a while back about LEDs in my '72 sport cluster-
![]() ![]() As far as your tach, if you don't mind a bit of fab work, get a piece of 3/16" sheetmetal or aluminum, and mount the aftermarket gages to it, using the ford sport cluster trim piece as a template for the openings.
Hiding the LEDs for a shift light in the fuel eco light is a good idea, and if feeling creative, you could always get a new piece of colored plastice and paint on new letters on the back so it's only visable with the lights on {I was thinking of something like "SHIFT, DAMN IT!!"}, as a suggestion.

Someone on 460ford.com with a yellow Ranchero (Fomoco8?) did what Andy did with all AutoMeter gauges in the stock cluster.
I used the flat panel from a 77-79 Cougar/LTDII/Ranchero, it was much easier to work with. In all honesty, I wish I just kept the stocky gauges, I blew way too much on these, and I'm not all that happy with the result. |

I was planning on using my existing 2 1/16" autometer gauges (they are currently mounted below the ashtray) plus a fuel pressure in the stock sport cluster just as you have done. What I may add to the equasion is getting them silk screened by a company we do lots of business with to match the speedo and tach font/design.. I have verified the fit of the gauges, I just want them to look right. I may have to do some lexan work though, as the hole for the clock adjuster bothers me..
One more little bit I may try to do is get the speedo recalibrated for 160mph (and renumbered). I know it can be done relitively easily, I just have to find the place that did my old speedo to match my gears..
Jim

Hey Flip, I talked to my buddy and he said he can match any weather seals, all he needs is a cross section scan so he can see what shape it is. Take a piece of the old seal, slice a piece off the end, put it on a white paper, scan it and send it to me. csmarko@telus.net

Hi Paul, Chris,
Thanks for the reply, I'll try to take a sample, but there are some pieces at the end of the seals (front doors) in a very different shape. I will try to take some pictures of the seals. Thanks, Flip. |
