started deconstructing the rear panels:
cut out replacement cardboard sections (warped water damaged) out of luan:
metal upper part reriveted onto the luan:

John tell me about the "luan"

it's 1/8" luan, luan is basically a close relative of mahogany. most people would refer to it as interior door skin (house doors) it's really only good for flat panels, i prefer to use it for flat panels vs hardboard as it don't warp (from moisture) like the hardboard can, my upholstery guy will argue with me about it as he prefers to use the hardboard, it's cheaper and easier for him to work with.

 my upholstery guy only had enough black vinyl left to do the rear panels, he's getting another roll in on monday, i really wanted the larger piece to cover the package tray so i could finish that and install the 6 x 9's but the good news is that piece to do both panels was only $10

This is how I did mine.

lay out the trim and armrest base: 

and padding to form the recess of the trim: 

i'm sure it would really "muffle" it, a thin layer of just fabric may be ok, but the jute insulation should cut down the sound quite a bit  

got one panel finished (still have to woodgrain the chrome trim yet)

got home early enough to stop buy my upholstery guy's place and get some more black vinyl, to do the package tray, and i got it done! 

i've been needing to get the side windows tinted so i can put all the panels, trim, etc. on , they need the panels off to have room to do it, but they aren't open on saturdays  and they're closed all days of these holidays, but as luck would have it,... i just happen to have tomorrow off, too( 5 days off) so 9:00am tomorrow road trip!!! and hoodless! if it's raining i may have to remove the air filter (paper filter and rain--not the best of friends)

looks good john!...so uh...you know christmas is in a couple days...and ive been pretty good this year....you can just hand over the keys and title when you're ready
