Those wheels are super mean!

Naw, you should totally LS swap it... or boost the hell out of it!  MPFI would probably be a good intermediate step so it's ready for a turbo. I know FI sounds scary but it is really awesome in so many ways. I don't know how much power a 22 can hold but I think toyota boosted it a few years from the factory so it's probably pretty respectable. Just seam weld some of the chassis and it should hold up fine. You don't want to be out there getting owned by all the Datsuns. Embarrassed

nah, it works good enough (...for now) i was thinking on turbo at one time or b&m blown lc engineering used to have a kit with a b&m mini blower bolt on kit! but i don't think b&m makes those small blowers anymore? come to think of it, yes toyota did turbo the 22r in the last gen MR2's.
here's a pic of that C J engineered sway bars: (yes there are two stacked in tandem)

note the "torino inspired strut rod" and also the differential is designed like a 9" Shocked

Wow, that's pretty cool. Those stacked sway bars seem legit. If it works it works. The front looks like a McPherson setup too. A lot of cars have a tension/radius rod setup just like the Torino. Even my 4th gen civic is like that. I'm surprised to see a live axle on the celica though. I was looking at buying a next gen supra and it had IRS.

I believe the 4Runner in the 80's had a 22re (same bottom end) with a turbo as well. I hear the problem was taking it into rivers and big mud pits. The turbo housing would crack from getting instantly cooled from splashed water.

The 22R and 22RE engines are super tough, as long as you don't dunk them. Have you reinforced the unibody?

update: haven't worked on cars much lately, i did buy a newer "hoopty" for a daily driver, since now i don't want to drive the celica in deicer any more! i'll post a before and after pic later (remember i just can't have anything "stock" Wink)  BUT lately i've been doing non-car artistic creativity...for a buddy of mine for his N scale model train (yes i too have some vintage N scale and vintage HO scale trains myself...i've been wanting to do this for myself for 40 years! someday!!) this is only a small section of his layout in a 12' x 12' room, it's all made from owens corning 2" pink foam board carved with a wire wheel on my grinder, then some latex house paint and brushed on and some air brushed paint too! and moss from my trees out back Wink all done in miniature! i think it turned out fairly realistic looking Wink (the masking tape is covering the track from overspray)

Whenever I look at a new post I look for pics first then I read. I saw that pic and was amazed at its beauty. I thought it was real. Great work.

This setup is killer.  Took my son to see it a couple years ago.  I think it may be time to head back for an update.

ok now back to cars...
not wanting to drive the celica as a d.d. anymore with deicer eating it up, i decided to buy a newer car for a d.d. i bought this car from my step-bro for $950 (92 nissan sentra 4dr)

well you know me! can't have anything STOCK Big smile so over the last few weeks i started to give it the "california johnny touch" Wink 1970-1/2 camero inspired rally stripes:

then a fiberglass body kit (which took a lot more modification to fit properly---much cutting and sectioning ConfusedAngry) tinted windows, chopped antennae, and a custom rear wing, and exhaust Wink

still need to lower the front about 1 1/2" yet, and wheels and tires.

BTW this is the first 4dr i've ever owned, and the first wrong wheel drive i've owned. but good enough for a daily driver and 35+ mpg

I like a 4 door in most vehicles. Far cry from how I used to feel. 4X4 - gotta have a 4 door. Truck - gotta have a 4 door. Wagon - gotta have a 4 door. Now I even like a sports sedan better than a sports coupe. All the utility and style with no compromises. C's TL does everything so well and will inhale asphalt, yet seats 4 adults in comfort and insurance is less than a comparable coupe.

I had a BUNCH of 4-door "Square" Clown Vics/Gran Monkeys. Throw on dual exhaust, police suspension parts, 15x8 wheels, wide tires, and I had a living room on wheels!!!
A LOT of 70s/80s cars had more headroom in the 4-doors, so, being "Big Bird".....
