I am thinking about buying a RetroSound Model 2 for my 76 Gran Torino to replace the stock radio. Does anyone have experience with this? My car only has the one speaker in the dash, but I'd like to at least add door speakers. Any thoughts or suggestions on speaker types/sizes? Any help is much appreciated.

doors are 5.25s. rear is either 6x8 or 6x9 depending on the year of your car.
I'd go retrosound model 2 if I were in the market for one. |

I used a Retrosound system in my brother's car and it's decent. It doesn't have a ton of power though if that's what your looking for. Both his car and mine used the Retrosound speakers (I have an original radio with a conversion kit) and they sound decent enough for the money. They fit in factory locations with ease. I ran 5.25" speakers in the doors (which are actually slightly smaller than stock) and 6 x 9s in the rear. My car had the four speaker system from the factory, but I had to run all new wires. The Retrosound speakers come with wires, enough to do the whole car.

I'll tackle this problem, myself, in a year or so. No idea what head units are available. Not really concerned about the originality of appearance, either, so a twin shaft receiver may not happen.
FWIW, though, back in the day when I put a sound system in my old '74, I ran 6x9's in the rear deck and I fabbed a set of mounting plates that let me mount 6x9's in the bottom front corners of the doors. Cut the lower corners out and pop riveted in the mounts. The windows JUST cleared the magnets in the fully retracted position. Think they were Pioneer's. With a 100 watt amp/equalizer for the whole thing, it sounded pretty decent.... for 1980, that is. |

I have the Retrosound in dash and Polk 5 1/4 (I think) in the doors and Polk 6x9 in the deck. Sounds pretty good. My problem was finding a constant +12 for memory. Could not get to the cigarette lighter wire, so I have run a wire to the battery with a fuse. Not elegant, but works.

I was going to go with them, but decided not to put speakers back in the ranchero. At least for now.

I've got a Retrosound head unit. I used some Pioneer 5 1/4" speakers in my kick panels, and Pioneer 4x10's in the back of my wagon. Definitely not the most powerful, but it works good enough for my needs. It has an aux port. And it does have RCA output jacks for an Amp, if I decide to go that route.

I went with Kenwood 3 ways all the way around and the Custom Autosound USA-230 head unit. 5 ¼’s in the front doors and 6 x 9’s in the rear. I can still plug in my IPod into this unit, but it doesn't have the Ipod controls built in like the USA-630. (Even then you still need a special adaptor that costs a lil over $100) I figure as often as I change the music I can easily reach into the ash tray and get the Ipod itself. I wired the Auxilary jack cable into the ash tray. It fits as if it belongs there. I also added a 4 channel amplifier and a subwoofer under the front seat. Best part is everything is hidden so no bulky stuff seen. Kenwood 2404S AmplifierHighlights: · 4-channel car amplifier · 40 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms (60 watts x 4 at 2 ohms) · 130 watts RMS x 2 bridged output at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode) · CEA-2006 compliant · switchable high-pass filter (80 Hz, 12 dB per octave) on front (A ch) channels · variable low-pass filter (50-200 Hz, 18 dB per octave) on rear (B ch) channels · MOSFET power supply · preamp and speaker-level inputs · requires 10-gauge power and ground leads — wiring and hardware not included with amplifier · fuse rating: 30A x 1 · 13-13/16"W x 2-3/8"H x 8-1/2"D · warranty: 1 year Kenwood KSC-SW11 Subwoofer Highlights: · compact powered subwoofer · aluminum enclosure with 8-1/4" x 5-1/8" sub · built-in amplifier: 75 watts RMS power (150 watts maximum) · wired remote for control over: o volume level o variable low-pass crossover (50-125 Hz) o selectable phase control (0°, 180°) · power/ground wiring harness · preamp- (RCA) and speaker-level inputs · frequency response: 35-125 Hz · dimensions: 11"W x 2-3/4"H x 7-1/2"D · warranty: 1 year |
