it appears the only differences are in ratio and input shafts.

I've searched all the parts suppliers websites. they all use the 6541/6539 designation with some variation attached. This is what I've come up with:

6541 is a 32 spline output shaft/4 turn ratio box with Ford gear. 32 spline output shaft. input shaft is .725 and 34 splines.

6539 is a 32 spline output shaft/3.3 turn ratio box with a Saginaw gear. 32 spline output shaft. input shaft is .800 and 32 splines.

It looks like the difference in installation is the input shaft. Does anyone have anything to verify this? I don't trust rockauto write ups and this information is limited to a supply named ATSCO.

I would prefer to not have to deal with a adapter, would just rather have bolt in. But not sure on the information provided by ATSCO. Is there an input shaft difference or do they have the information wrong?

I saw where you guys were using the Boss box, but I don't want to drop to a 26 spline output shaft since I already have my 32 spline Moog Pitman arm.

TIA

Cardone at Oriellys/Carquest/Advanced uses 27-6539 and 27-6541 part numbers. Rockauto ATSCO uses 6539/6541. Not messing with AZ Duralast on this install.

just going with the 4:1 ratio box 6541, don't want to mess with fabing up the adaptor or hoses...out of time and need to get to reassy if i'm going to drive this by 3/25. Box will be in Monday afternoon. $115. Tried online to get discounts, no one had it. called the local Oreilly's that always seems to be able to find what I need...they're getting it from Dallas sent here.

Cardone is the reman. hoping it doesnt leak.

As far as I know there aren't any quick steer internal mods that can be done or swapped from other boxes for the Ford built steering gear. If you were to go with the Saginaw box that is a whole different story, there are many options with the Saginaw. If you are using a Ford/Thompson pump, there is a factory replacement hose from the pump to a Saginaw box. If you have a Saginaw PS pump and use a Saginaw PS gear you will have to have one made. Ford, IIRC(I have never seen one), never put a Saginaw PS pump coupled to a Saginaw PS gear in a car(crazy huh). I upgraded my '79 Ranchero's Saginaw PS gear with quicker steering ratio internals from a '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it made a quite a difference . There are adapters to use from other vehicles that go from the "rag-joint" to the steering gear's input shaft, one example is an 80's Jeep Grand Wagoneer(the BIG Wagoneer), their Saginaw boxes use same spline count on the input shaft. Sorry not getting this info to you sooner, a new quick steering box would give you more 's per gallon while driving as compared to a 4 turn Ford box. Good luck with your project, Todd

all good Todd. thanks for the info. for now i've got to go with the bolt up quick option. i'm up against a time deadline.

a donor 73 460 Ranchero, 4 other 70 verts, and 3 other 72s have gone through my home garage in the past several years. some were too far gone to save and ended up becoming part cars. the others i flipped/saved. those projects were for two reasons-to fund and gather parts for my personal 70 vert and 72 FB project. i have filled my garage, attic and backyard with Torino parts.

the potential is high that i might be moving to a different city. Censored

so now i'm in thrash mode. i'm throwing my 72 together since it is the easiest to get to whole mode. but...i'm not just hanging parts...i'm painting the underhood etc and rebuilding all the mechanicals as fast as possible. the paint will wait, but i'm doing the color change areas while the fenders are off.

maybe one day i'll do the fast ratio box
