Closer to the panamera. I was thinking graft the fastback rear to the sedan roof, keeping all that is there on the sedan.

Actually, that sounds very cool. I'll bet the reception would be awesome, given the fact 4 door fastbacks are all the rage now.

Why not go the Full-Monty and graft a hatch back there (like the Panamera)? Utilize the lower portion of the decklid, a larger back glass, reinforcements on the rear of the roof for the hinges, and modify as needed.

Funny you say that. Ford did a Montego concept where they did a full hatch and a tailgate and fit a 6 wheeler in the back of a two door Montego.

If a person was so inclined...

Grab the hatch off a Nova hatchback (if you want the original lines of the 4 door kept) and widen to fit. Novas kept that "bend", mimicking a formal roof style. Then modify with the Torino trunk lid. Use the Nova recess channels, since it sits flush with the upper body lines (no side seam showing) and proceed.

Grab the hatch off a Hornet Sportabout (if you desire the Torino Sportroof lines) and widen to fit. Again, use the inner channels off the Sportabout so that it sits flush with the upper surfaces and does not show a seam from the sides. Again, use the Torino trunk lid.

This is doable with the right skills, I think.

I like the basic concept of "guest's" car, but would probably section a wagon onto a formal to keep the shorter wheelbase, and I think the formal rear side window would look cleaner.
That Montego sporthauler reminds me of Dan the Ranchero Man's rear tonneau/hatch thingey...Thumbs Up
just on an earlier year.
The thing I wonder if "guest" considered:
4 door/wagon uses a different windshield than a 2 door/ranchero. A-pillar post angle is different.
This will affect the side windows in a door swap.
When you do this swap on a fairmont, there is a 2 door sedan (non-futura) that matches post angle and windshield.
