some of you guys have used hooker 6126hkr headers. I bought them last May, just tried install on my 72 460.
giant PITA. spent my whole day off dealing with it. I can't get the 3d pipe on driver side to clear the steering box, no matter how much I argue with it. I've removed the center link and tie rods assy's, lifted the motor up, etc. I've lowered in increments, tried to adjust, just can't get it to clear the steering box. It is also hitting the bottom of the engine cradle. any tips? I hate to start 'modifying' the third tube but am seriously considering it It looks like I will have interference with the centerlink and driver tie rod if I can get the header to mount.

I just went to the garage and looked. There is about 1/2 in. clearance over the steering box for #3. #2 has less than a 1/4 around the front of the box. Everything on drivers side cleared. The passenger side to be moved a bit. I did this by putting a large and long pipe in the outlet and moved it a bit for clearance. It has been a long time but if I remember correctly it was less than1/4 in inboard.
Hope this helps, Ray

Tony,
One quick question.... are you using OEM FORD 429/460 mounts? Talking with Charles Crites the other day he said a lot of guys get into trouble using aftermarket mounts and because they are NOT factory duplicates, they put the engine in the wrong location and then everyone has trouble mounting headers and the first thing they think is the headers are junk or made wrong.

Hookers work with stock mounts (the Crites I am not sure about). Mine clear everything (just barely) and I do not have actual contact with the steering gear.
Do you have stock mounts? (I think they make the engine sit a touch higher than Crites) Do you have cylinder heads that have stock location exhaust ports? Those would be the first questions I would ask. Also, I know there are some "self clearancing" issues that may occur with some suspension components (info from Psquare75). When you say the header pipe hits the steering gear, is the header all bolted up? I ask because I just did mine. As much as I hated them, I do have to give much credit to Hooker - they did the impossible in nearly zero space. I am not sure the situation could be improved upon, although someone mentioned in a previous post from a month ago or so that the Crites headers come apart for easier install? I do not own a pair of Crites so I do not know that myself for sure. I would have considered the Crites, but the Hookers come in Ceramic coated, which makes a huge difference with heat. A person could have a bare set ceramic coated at a shop that does that, I just did not know of any in the Seattle area.

Scott,
Was me that mentioned that the Crites headers were individual tube assemblies when I was discussing with them about diong the shortie 460 headers. I'm leaning towards the Crites set because of the individual pipe arrangement and being able to mount them without having to loosen/lift the engine.

sounds like the motor mounts sit lower? can't you shim between the mount and the block see if that cures the problem, if so then you could fab up a nice steel or aluminum spacer the shape of the mount. as far as ceramic coating ,i should post a link to the place that did mine, they ship parts in and out every day, excellent quality, i should do a post in the venders section for anyone thats interested
