Having a bit of difficulty in find the correct axle gasket for my 74 big bearing housing. I'd like the original style tin style gasket. Can anyone help me out?

John,

I just started my search for them as well.....

A quick google search this morning and I found two different Ford sites that list the flange gasket as Fel-Pro #55035, but looking at a couple parts sites the dimensions don't jive, so I'm gonna see if NAPA has them in stock and take mine in tomorrow for comparison.

These should be the ones you are looking for, Felpro #55065. This may help:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/1976-Ford-Thunderbird/Axle-Flange-Gasket/_/N-invvxZ6o3h8
I looked up an application for a '76 T-bird. Hope this helps. Todd

They are advertising that the fel pro #55065 has an inner diameter 4-3/4 inches, (but that might be a mistake). It is made of composite material.

The Victor Reinz #J26102 is listed for a "2800 pound rear axle", but the only dimensions that they give in the advertisement, are that it has four 13/32 inch outer diameter bolt holes. And it is made of beaded steel.

I do know this gasket is used for a small bearing housing axle flange.

The ford part number for the victor reinz J26102 gasket is: D3OZ-1001-A. There are several retailers that have it in stock, but they do not list the outer diameter of the hole for the axle as being 3-1/8 inches (like you are looking for).
This is a picture of the victor reinz J26102 / Ford Part Number: D3OZ-1001-A (Beaded Steel Gasket).

According to This Website the fel pro 55605, the victor reinz J26102 and the ford part number D3OZ-1001-A are all the same exact gasket.
You would have to call (or go to) autozone, to order one. Or maybe you can call or write to Fel pro, to see if they have the measurement for the inner diameter of the large opening/hole in the middle of the gasket, (to make sure that it is 3-1/8").
Just ask them for the fel pro 55605 axle flange gasket. Because autozone lists the inner diameter as 4-3/4 inches.

Here is their advertisement:

Autozone lists the fel pro 55605 gasket as being made of a composite material. But as you know, composite materials are sometimes made of different types of metals also (like the type of gaskets that you are looking for).

Todd, have you proven the 55065 Felpro gasket to be the correct part? Dave ,I think you may have it correct that the 55065 measurement maybe incorrect. I will ck my ford parts CD tonite.... If I'm sober enough. It's been a long day! D30Z sounds correct cause they went to big bearing in 73. Can anyone confirm this? I don't want to oder the wrong one, nobody local stocks it, special order!

All the info I can find on this axle flange gasket says it is "supposed" to be the "one" you are needing. I tried to research the dimensions of this part and with ALL the technology we have at our fingertips, I could not find any hard evidence to confirm them. I went by application ('76 T-bird, same flange ends as a mid 70's Torino axle), the 4 3/4" rear wheel bearing center bore # has got to be a misprint due to fact that the bolt centers are 3.562" x 2.0" with a 3.15" wheel bearing opening, heck the rear wheel bearing cups on my '00 SuperDuty are only 3.25" in diameter. The Torino axle must be "SuperDeeDuper-Duty" if the 4 3/4" rear wheel bearing opening dimension is correct. I wish I could give a more "concrete" answer, but this is the best I have. Take the axle flange gasket to the parts store and let them measure them and/or order them to replace what you have, that way if they come in wrong they buy it. Good luck, Todd

I would definetley order at least one Fel Pro 55065 axel flange gasket, to see if it fits. The 55035 is definetley not the gasket that you need, since it is for the small bearing rear end.
And since those are the only two axle flange gaskets that several other companies also list for your vehicle, the fel pro 55065 would almost definetley be the correct gasket.

Todd,I did the same leg work as you have done.My local parts store, had ordered a set of 55035(wrong as Dave stated). When I had wanted him to try the 55065, now he hesistant to order the 55065 in fear that they'll be wrong because of the 4 3/4 center(misprint?)...I think I'm with billy on the amazon thing. Be very happy to put this to sleep and move on!

Is it just me, or is anyone else just pissed they can't keep a simple flange gasket in stock locally?
For a freaking ford 9" of all pieces of automotive hardware.

Joe,Yes they are the original tin style.
Andy, Yeah it's ridiculous...In the town I live in there are four parts stores, Napa,Advanced and the other two are independently owned.I try to use my friends independent store. he was hesitant to order the 55065 because of the incorrectly posted measurement by felpro. He is stuck with the special order 55035's that weren't correct.i didn't want to stick him with the 55065's if they turned out wrong so I ordered them from advanced.Just glad there still available

Jackpot!

Fits:
1979 Lincoln Mark, 9" big bearing, 3/8" bolt, taper roller

55065 Axle Flange gasket
Timken SET 20 Axle bearing/retainer/seal

Seems metallic, not sure, steel or tin or somethin.. certainly good for an OEM replacement though.

Billy, Thems the ones! Were your old seals pressed in the axle tubes as mine were? this style seal allows the bearings to be lubed rather than the original dry sealed bearing...Better setup!

Hmm, never seen that before.

Hey, look hard and close at the retainer lock press fit ring.

When I got my timken bearing, it was no where near the size of my original lock ring.

Billy-
I'm getting ready to have to pull my GTS axles out to replace a bad diff seal. did you get dims on the lock ring?
I've got concerns over mine and may want to replace them, because the lock ring from the timken replacement wheel bearing was way undersized.

Thanks for listing the part numbers on the two sizes guys, I appreciate that. Evidently the damn flange gaskets are listed as obsolete at auto zone and orielly's.

Amazing napa had three on the small beating gaskets on hand for my 72 housing. Ironically no stock on the big bearing flange gasket.
I'm just going to order a pile of them from rock auto and be done with it.
Note if you replace the nuts 3/8-24 thread.

Random notes for anyone else:
