Anyone running a bbf stroker in their Torino, Montego, Ranchero....?
I was "thinking" of going with a 521.
Been doing some research for the past couple weeks. Seems like a good idea since no block mods are needed. Just bigger heads. |

A lot of us on here have the big strokers. The power is unbelievable over a 460. Run the alum. super cobra jet or p-51 heads.

I've wanted to do a 521 stroker in my 72, but how does changing only the heads make a 429/460 a 521??

The trans has not been built yet. Using the C6 that came with it. As far as the rear, it's all new. Original 9", Traction loc with 3.25 gears. 28 spline though. May have to upgrade the axles and the joints if I go with the stroker.
No changes to the block are necessary (no clearance issues). You just have to change out the crank, rods, pistons. Since you have more cubic inches, you need the bigger heads |

I like my 521, even though it has only been around the block a few times. Very nice motor, and if you are doing a 460 already, you've already committed to the space issues, etc - why not get some extra cubes.

Yea, I was leaning toward a 521.
That's what made me start looking at the bigger strokers. Heck, by the time I buy bearings, pistons, and crank (and new rods). I'm fairly close to a bigger stroker. I know if I went with a 460 I could use the same rods that my 429 has. Seems the bigger strokers use the 2.2 journals which call for the chevy rods. Looks like $1600 will get me an internally balanced crank kit including balancing the kit. Scott |

I had a 21' Baja jetboat years back with a 521, Impressive to say the least. Could run it all day at 5,900 rpm. Well until I ran out of gas... Which didn't take long.

I think the only consideration, besides cost, is you start getting into the realm of "must have headers". Not a big deal for most. I hate them, but made them work just fine (I give significant credit to Hooker for the incredible job they did, but it is still a pain). Exhaust manifolds can be used with a 429 or 460 not looking for max performance, but when you up the cubic inches, better instate and exhaust are almost a must.
I can not speak to the build process, I purchased a compete stroker motor that was complete and broke in from CarsByCarl. Nice engine, and I did not have to worry about any of that stuff (my project has seen enough things to worry about!) |

I would love to by a crate by CarsbyCarl but opted to just buy the parts and have it built locally. I've done a ton a research and it sounds pretty straight forward. Basically building a 460 except with diff pistons, crank and rods. Seems the rods are Chevy rods (6.8 or 6.7 length, 2.2 journal instead of 2.5). The best thing about it is since the 385 series block is so big, there are no clearance issues.
Yes, I agree with the headers. Also, it seems at least reworking the heads are a must and minimum. Getting any of the alum heads are a plus. Only a mild cam is needed. I may go with the Crates though. They are a tad bit bigger and from what I've read seem to fit better. I will be using the stock mounts. ---- Thanks for the input Robb Edited by Montego01 - 12-May-2014 at 11:03PM |

So you guys with the 429, 460, stroker, what intake manifold do you run?
Carl told me only the Torker II will fit under the hood (with a 1" spacer). Or a Performer (non RPM) He also suggested the Lunati 11602 cam with the edelbrock heads. He mentioned the TFS heads would not work since the exhaust port is raised so the headers would not work...maybe the Crites would though. |

I have the standard performer intake. I was looking more for lower RPM power, not planning to run it at 5000rpm. Fit is nice with a 1/2" carb spacer.

Thanks...looks like their aren't too many choices for a 460 Torino Montego.
Torker II and the Performer. Planned on running the Performer RPM, but I guess it's too tall. |

My Edelbrock Victor & Dominator carb fit under the stock hood. A bit much for the street though.

Interesting....stock mounts I assume and frame?
Victor is a pretty tall manifold to (6+ inches?). I see you have the stock hood. I would think I could fit a RPM manifold then. Or unless there is considerable difference in height of a GTS hood compared to Montego GT hood. 10.33 - awesome! |

Ya, stock frame & mounts. The stock scoop gives enough clearance. Can't say about the Montego's hood. Does it have a popped up area like the Torino?

I'm halfway into a 408 small block stroker but just got a sweet deal on a complete 429 thunderjet,Putting the engine in a restored 68 torino gt fastback, what do you think should I start over and go with the Big Block and stroke it out? You support and advice would be appreciated! Mike.

very nice indeed Regarding the build... Also I had the stealth on my 460 in my 72 torino for a while. The stock 460 didn't like the big intake but it did fit. The Torino hood is different than the Montego hood. I am working on a 521 stroker, just finishing up the valve train now. Carl helped me put together my kit too. Carl seems to know his sh** for sure and was always willing to answer the questions I had. I can't wait to get the build done. It is just turning out to be a little bit more than expected because I decided to spring for some Edelbrock aluminum heads for the weight savings and thermal properties. Now I'm really not worried about flow at this point. They Edelbrocks seemed like a very close match to the D3's I was building up so I just went with it. I am going to have way more HP than I can use anyways. Personally, if had to choose between the two, I'd go aluminum heads instead of a larger stroke. Then just make as much missing ft/lbs as possible with gears, valve timing, and tuning. I'm just really trying to shave weight off the front of the car anywhere I can at this point.

I am using the Performer as well. Ford 460/465 HP, with 492 ft/lbs torque, 750 carb. Hughes built trans and 3000 stall, 4:11 posi 9" rear.
