I don't know the cut off dates for early built cars, but they had conventional points. My '74 Ranchero GT 351c 2v had them.  By 1975 production all of them were DuraSpark (the early Dura spark)

Easiest way to tell? The electronic ignition module will be on driver side inner fender behind where the washer pump resistor is. Box that is about four inches square.

my engine compt was stripped, not much left. but on the harness i thought i had found a duraspark style plug end.
i thought  '75 was the beginning, since i have a NOS duraspark stator and it has the D5PZ part number prefix, but wasnt sure. thanks.  looks like i get to do the resistor wire removal on the ignition switch!

If you got nothing, add it in, at this point make it what you want, youre the one thats gotta drive it and look at it so it may as well be something you enjoy...I do know in 73 the Pantera cleveland had electronic ignition as well as dual point, but I dont believe the domestic Fords had them til 75.

I have heard and/or read that Ford first installed the Duraspark I ignition system in late '73 ('74 model year) and the Duraspark II system was installed in late '75 ('76 model year). I do remember we had a '74 Lincoln Towncar and it had electronic ignition but used a distributor cap that resembled a points style cap with female terminals, not like the larger later model Duraspark II cap that has male terminals. Here are a few diagrams, 6 and 7 wire systems, hope they help.

There are plenty more diagrams available if you Google Duraspark wiring diagram. Good luck. Todd

I can't find the papers on my '74 I had, but I know it was built in '73, but don't know the exact month, & it  had  the conventional ign.. When I was going to convert to duraspark I found 'some '74's in the junckyard had electronic. That when I was told that there was a difference between early & late. There could be a difference between Cailf. emission cars too, but not sure. The big cap distr. I have seen  have been '77 -up.

Just curious, do you know the build date? It can be found on the vech. certification label on the drivers door post.

electronic ignition was an option in the fords/merc's for 73/74 and became standard in 75. If I had a car that was running points and wanted to convert I would go with a pertronix system because it all fits under the cap and you can install it in about 20 minutes. It is very reliable and very clean set up.

I'd have to check my books, but I though for 1974 400's and 460's came with electronic ignition as standard equipment.

My '74 Ranchero was fairly well optioned, so it could have been an option or standard. No idea, but it was all neatly tied in the wiring harness as well as the seat belt interlock. Looked very factory to me.

Pete-
I have a 1973 Duraspark Harness. Let me know if you want it, it's yours.

I converted mine to a 77-78 tbird harness and 400 duraspark distributor, still uses the small cap. As I recall I think you sent me a set of Moroso blue plug wires.

Not to thread jack, but someone please refresh me on the point of the resistor wire?
I used a '72 dash harness with some modifications, and mixed in the '76 Elite Duraspark engine harness with an NOS LTD engine harness.

I've got issues on my car with the way I had to wire the tach to work. *sigh* I can't leave my car in the acc position as the ignition gets power as the power lead for my tach...really need to correct this...

The resistor wire is there to drop the voltage across the coil so it does not over heat. When the car is first started it gets a full 12V then once running the ignition switch will pass the voltage through the resistor wire dropping it down to 9V.

my factory wiring diagram for 74 shows an option for electronic ignition. but i have discovered that it was a points car.      it has those big duraspark looking plugs in the harness, but they are not for that.
