Hi, I'm still keeping in mind driving my gran torino this year...
What I can't find is the right color of the engine. It's a 351C Cobra Jet
There are several different blues, which one is the right?
I can buy VHT here in europe, but nobody seems to know.
I'm just sure it's not very light.
someone here has VHT SP134 , should it be the right one?
Many thanks for your answer

Hi Dan, try to find the medium blue Ford engine color. That's the most popular, but unfortunately the parts stores do not choose to carry that. They like the light blue, and the "purple" blue.

A member here took his charcoal canister out of his car and had some normal car paint mixed to match that. Does your car still have the stock air cleaner lid, or that canister, or anything that medium blue to use as an example? Take it off and go see what you can find at parts stores there.

Hi Don,
Thanks for the tip. Last week I've just thought to take the canister out of the car. It's not connected anymore.
Normal car paint should handle temperature?
Do I have to use a primer?
Have a great day.

I would think you'd want an engine specific paint that could handle temps up to 500 degrees.

I like to use a primer.  I think it gives a better overall finish.

Daniel, try to find an engine paint that is a decent match to that canister you have for an example.

I have known of people to use high quality car paint for valve covers, but I don't how long that will last. The engine and heads will get too hot for anything but the high temp paints.

I use acrylic enamel or urethane enamel on my engines and use a self etching primer. Paint stands up nicely to the heat and looks great.

This was done 2 years ago. I was too excited to put the primer on. I couldn't wait to put the engine in. -Rick-

That looks great, and that's the right color. Back in 1980 when I did my first 351C, each paint that said Ford dark blue, it was "purple." We didn't have the many choices for paint as we do now. I tend to go with black now for an engine, but for my Ranchero I'm sure I'll make it that proper medium blue.
