Hi   First off, im a TOTAL newbie so sorry in advance for the dumb questions. i recently purchased this 1970 fairlane 500 convertible with a 429 4speed. im gonna state some issues maybe ppl can help me with. the VIN on the title is 0B29Fxxxxxx which matches the dashboard. But a 29 is a fairlane 500 2dr Hardtop from what i saw. The car has the well for the top so doesnt seem like it was chopped and it has failane 500 badges everywhere, but it has a torino back light set up i think any ideas ?  next issue it has no top and no frame. Any ideas on how and where to get an original frame or a fairly cheap alternative like maybe a custom top?  Or even a DIAGRAM of what the frame looks like so maybe i can start buyin seperate parts. Thanks for your help  (i know you guys like pics :)

Welcome. Sorry can't help with you questions, as I'm unfamiliar with that generation Torino. I do know some early ones ('69 1/2  early '70) were actually Falcon models. I seen one Falcon sport roof 429 cj drag pack car, a local beef sandwich restaurant owner here in Chicago had one, heard he paid stupid money for it.

Hey John. Yes in Rockland County NY. Maybe you can make the all ford show in Carlisle this June. If not we can do a local show this summer. You can never have enough torino buddies. Good luck with your car. Rick

0B29Fxxxxxx decodes as a 1970 Oakville production Fairlane 500, engine code F is a 302-2V low compression

convertibles were built at Norfolk code N, body style 37
429 engines are either; K/2bbl carb, V/429-4V, N/ThunderJet, C/CobraJet, J/RamAir, Z/Boss429

I'd start looking under the skin for the VIN stamped in the metal

Hi Rockatansky
thanks for the info and advice
The fella i bought it from said it has a 68 429 thunderjet  (which seems to be true when i googled the intake manifold codes and the head codes). I was also told that the transmission, driveshaft, and rear come off a 70 cobra jet, which i havent had a chance to prove or dis-prove( and not sure how) The thing that stumps me most is that it has all sorts of fairlane 500 badges all over the place, like the doors and the rear quarter panels, but it has a well (if thats what its called) for the top .....and a rear tail light section that i think is torino. I read somewhere that the sequence numbers started at 100001. mine is in the 111000 range. Could it be that early on up in canada they produced some fairlane 500 convertibles or is that an impossibility?

yeah I like the car too, no surprise that the driveline is changed from a low compression 302 after 45 years

over the years Ford/Canada did produce models that were not available in the US, and it's possible that the info from the decoder info is not complete. Oakville Assembly wiki product list only goes back to 1973 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakville_Assembly

only glaring question left is, what did Oakville code the vert's as?

No such thing as a 70 or 71 fairlane convertible.  ALL 70/71 convertibles were GT's.  Nice car and will be even nicer once you undo some things.

Mike, I learned something new today. Never knew that 1970-71 convertibles were only available as GT models until now. Interesting, given that in 1968 and 69 you could get a Fairlane 500 convertible in addition to a Torino GT convertible. Slow phasing-out of the topless Ford intermediate I guess.

Welcome, and beautiful car. Hope everything works out for you on the vin number.

Welcome!  Gorgeous Torino!  Or Fairlane!  Or whatever it is!!  LOL

Sounds like you've got a strange one here.  Like already mentioned, the 70-71 Torino/Fairlane convertibles were available as Torino GTs only.  Yours has definitely got a Torino GT hood and tail light panel.  A Marti Report will tell you everything you need to know, assuming you've got the correct VIN.  But, it sounds like the VIN you've got is for a Fairlane.  Perhaps someone did a top-notch convertible conversion, including the well??  Let us know what you find out.

You may very well want to pull the plastic inner fender shield and look at the vin stamped on the tag there to find the true vin for the car although it may open a huge can of worms. i believe its on the drivers side.  if its vin'd as a fairlane 500, that's a whole lot of illegal by the guy who sold it to you and you may get screwed if there's ever an insurance claim. or worse.
check out the torinocobra forum, there are threads on how and where to check this tag. i assume the door tag is missing?

Title is definitely not for that car. As Mike said ALL 70-71 Torino convertibles were Totino GT's. And ALL convertibles were built in Lorain, Oh.
Looks like the seller was trying to pull a fast one.
As Mike said, pull the left front fender and get the vin number off the body tag up near the windshield. (actually there are 2 tags, one on each side the same) The correct vin for the car will start with 0H37 for a 1970 or 1H37 for a 1971.
Let us know what you find out.

That info is not correct....All convertibles were built in Lorain, Oh code H and there were no 429 2v engines (k code was not an option for any Torino 70-71) Also no Boss 429 Z codes offered in Torino.

Do not invest one penny in to the car until you straighten out the VIN issues. The car is not correct in any way. Might want to contact your local P.O.

Hello.

As stated, the 70 / 71 Torino GT convertible was the only iteration of that body, and PLEASE pull a fender to verify the VIN. I am sure you are not going to like what you find if you have a Fairlane title and matching dash VIN.

Also, the Craigslist add from Boston with the convertible top, is from one of the last old local junk yards in the South Shore area that has not been crushed out.

The guy posting the Craigslist add, and owner of the junk yard is Eddie. Photo of it attached.

The contact info is, Central Auto Exchange 781-344-2300, or Edwards Automotive 781-771-6260.

Eddie is a good guy, but he gets top dollar for his stuff, so be sitting down.

He also has a 70 N code automatic Cobra that has been sitting on its floor pan for the last 20 years while it tries to return itself to its former life as iron ore.

Good luck, Mike H.
