Hi.
Just found this forum a couple of days ago.
Been trying to read up some so I don't ask "those" questions.

Got a 72 Ranchero GT. 351Cleveland with a C4. 2 barrel. Bucket seats, not sure if they are stock or not, but I like them. Car came with a split bench seat in the back the p.o. bought but never installed. Something I need to get rid of, it's taking up space.
It's my daily driver for the most part, I have a project car already and this isn't supposed to become another.
Other than the tires/rims and what I have done it is mainly stock.

I've had it about a month and a half or so.

It's pretty rough, has quite a bit of rust, including the floor pans, which I didn't see somehow when I bought it. But it runs pretty good for the most part. The p.o. put a carb and a distributor in it.
I need to sort out the vacuum lines, seems they didn't bother with things like the vacuum advance line to the distributor. Not sure what else is messed up. It has a hesitation that is getting worse, the p.o. had to go thru 2 carbs, and I am not sure it is still right. But need to fix all the vacuum stuff first.

Mostly this is a "don't fix it if it isn't broke" car. I put aftermarket gauges in since most of the factory ones didn't work. That is still a work in progress, need to run the oil pressure line, and figure out what to put in the fifth spot. Have oil pressure, voltage, gas, and water temp so far.
I also put a Retrosound radio in. New battery and cables. I have a new a/c compressor and a few other bits for that, but need a new condensor and new lines. Had to change the water pump a couple of weeks ago.
Out of major money to spend on it so hopefully nothing else needs done. I do have a 3G alternator and wiring kit to put on soon. And I have already added headlight relays.

Came with new tires and newer aluminum rims. Rear bushings were done, but not with poly. So that is something on the to do list. As well as poly all around. However it handles and drives ok for now, so I am going to have to leave it as is.

Red with white stripes, although under the hood stripe it is silver, so I don't know if that was the original color combination. At least part of the car was repainted at some point in the past. Definitely has rust in the usual corners(as well as the floor pans mentioned above). Kind of disappointing, but I don't know the car's history.  It's definitely a 20 or so footer.

White and black interior, except for seats, they are white with red inserts. Needs carpet, dashpad, and seats redone at the least. Not horrible, but not good either.

I am at work, will try to remember to post pictures later.

I am going to have to work on getting more pictures uploaded here. This is probably the most deceiving picture I have, doesn't show any of the real problems.

Thanks, all.

I work in Chandler currently, at Intel. (yuck).
Trying to make sure the Ranchero is my driver, but I miss a few days here and there.

Fun car, yeah, for the most part. I am having issues with the Grant style steering wheel I installed and had to put the stock wheel back on for right now. The problem is really with the adapter, getting it spaced right so there is no interference when steering. Got to get that fixed, I really don't like the stock wheel.

It pretty much is a 2 steps forward, 1.5 backwards thing whenever I do something on it. Just have to keep on going though.

Thanks.
I found this one in Parker. The seller had it on the Phoenix CL under "Project Car, $4000". He had Ranchero in the description. That was the only reason it showed up in my searching.
I had the same reasoning. We had to get a second vehicle, and I really needed something with a bed to haul stuff. I was thinking maybe a 77 or so, or even a 65, but this was supposed to be my wife's daily driver and a 65 doesn't meet my safety standards for her unless it has had a lot of stuff added.
I was even considering El Camino's.Wacko I didn't want something newer than the mid 70's because I need to be able to work on it. Plus the 72 Ranchero has always been one of my Holy Grail cars. My dad had one in the later 70's that I drove when home on leave from the Navy. I've had a 68 and a 60 in the past, as well as a couple of Fairlane/Torinos but I really wanted the 72. There were a few nice looking 77-79's on CL, but one of those would always be "wrong" for me.

I need the hauling capability for my real project car, a 74 Pinto wagon. That was going to be the daily driver eventually, but now it is going to be the wild car. Will put a 9 inch rear and a 351C in it along with a T5 trans.

the looks are really deceiving. It has rust in all the corners, as well as the floor boards. But other than that it runs pretty well and is fairly solid. Had some stuff done to it by the p.o.'s, it was in storage for 7-8 years, and the guy I bought it from had started fixing it up but found something else he really wanted instead. I probably overpaid for it, at least my Dad thinks so. Problem is that I didn't have the extra money to pay $7000 or higher for a "nice" one. My dad is used to $50K cars and higher.

As far as meeting, it doesn't matter to me if your Torino is running or not. LOL

Russ

Lo I saw that one n the first thing that came to mind was it's in Payson must have rust lol. I called the owner and he was firm at 4 it looks like a good car. Regarding overpaying dnt worry here in az that is a good price I see non running cars for almost 3 grand in ugly conditions. About the rust there is always a couple ranchero's in junkyards if you dnt mind cutting them up. I'm always going for parts. It's just hard finding torino parts. Hopefully I can c ur ranchero n go to a car show lol.

Welcome Russ, and your Ranchero looks like I wish mine did(same color and running). Keep at it, it's much easier to work on one that is complete and runs.

Thanks.
boy, do I know that!
My last 2 project cars were supposed to be complete and I thought close to running, but nope. 70 Lemans, turned into a frame off, then we moved within a month of starting to talk about moving from Ohio to Phoenix, so I didn't have time to even make it a roller(mainly due to health issues). $8K into it, sold it for $500. Cry Cry

My current project (not the Ranchero) is a 74 Pinto that was supposed to be all there, found out the seller lied about having everything for it after I bought it. It is about as close to a frame off as a unibody car can be now. It's at a standstill due to the Ranchero.

I have a tendency to take cars apart if I don't have the money to do anything else with them. Bad habit. Embarrassed
But with the Ranchero it HAS to be kept driveable, no more than a day's project can happen with it. And it is a blast to drive, which really helps.

I know how to do that also. I bought a 70 Mustang fastback in about 1986, my dream car back then, and it was basically apart(interior gutted), and no drive train. I didn't have space or time to work on it, and had to sell it a couple of years later. I'm glad that I did though, starting with a mess like that would have been much harder and more expensive, and that was back when the cars weren't hard to find, or expensive to buy complete.

I had two engines planned for my Ranchero along the first years I had it. This past year I finally decided to not invest in doing the 351C-2V and a custom 408-4V, so those parts I'll sell rather than try to assemble and hope a buyer would want those combo's. The stroker engines are feasible now, so I'll build a .060 over 302 with a 3.4" stroke, thus a 351 in a 302 block, and Cleveland heads. I love the Cleveland heads, but you have to be dedicated to using them 41 years after they stopped making them.

This forum is full of dedicated people.

Welcome! We all have had project cars at one time or another. I always will, LOL. That looks like a great start, and the fact it is driveable will save you money in the long run.

A while back, I bought a project car that was together, but not running. Got it running and it would not go into any gear. Fixed that and found that it had virtually no brakes. Fixed that and found the suspension was toast. Saluted it and down the road on someone else's trailer it went. It does pay to get one that is running, if you need it quickly and don't want a potential fortune in it to just enjoy.

and a few more.
Please let me know if I am not supposed to have all these pictures here.

Below are the headlight relays and the junction block. Yes, the wiring is all done now. Tongue

Below is the Ken Harrison dash speaker. I am running it along with a cheap $41 dual speaker box that is on the hump behind the seats. Temporary for that, I don't know what to do for good speakers. Don't really want to cut the door panels, and I really prefer having front and rear speakers anyway. But this works for now.

Boy, I really need new ductwork. But I suspect I am not the only one.
I actually used black duct tape on the duct that goes to the front of the dash by the instrument panel. But the defroster ducts are past that point of repair.

Great pics, and keep posting more. That truck is in fine shape to work on, good job.

I like those Sport door panels, I wish you would figure out how to place four speakers in them and not cut the panels up. I've been wishing JT would try that with his, but he's already placed his in the kick panels, plus he has a back seat. I have the normal flat door panels, and I placed four speakers in those. The rear pair are perfectly aimed behind the seats, so if the Sport panels can't be used to hide speakers, this will work.
