I dropped off a boatload of parts at the machine shop but I haven't settled on a cam just yet. Fortunately the heads will keep him busy for a minute. I'm a little concerned about over camming the engine because of the power brakes and I'm settling on a few milder grinds.
One is Comp Cams 270HR. The .050 duration is at 215 and lift works out to .576 with the 1.73 rockers. The machinist likes the 50 degrees overlap and believes more duration will adversely affect the vacuum. So I thought I'd see what some of you guys are running and get some opinions before I made a final decision. BTW. A few other points of interest in the equation. 10:1 (ish) compression, 70 4V heads, roller lifters and rockers, headers, probably sticking with a 750cfm carb.

I am not a CAM expert on the numbers and all.
I do know IF you can go with a roller lifter set up... DO IT! I am working with my shop on doing it on my 351W too. |

How've you been Carl? The roller cam is basically a done deal. I've already bought a nice looking set of Lunati link bar retro fits.
I'd go with a Lunati Voodoo cam but that .600 lift is skirting the edge without using lifter bore sleeves.

If figure it to be a safe cam for vacuum. I'm more or less trying to find out where that line is to walk up to it and not cross over.

Chuck, I have comp cams 290HR in my 351CJ stoker 393. @.050 duration 230 with a lobe separation of 110,Valve lift of .578 . compression ratio is 10.7:1 Although I have issues with my engine build. I can attest this cam provides enough vac to run power brakes.

Has anyone been able to use the reduced base circle Comp Cams with the link bar lifters without a problem?
I'm using the Lunati lifters because I'm told the placement of the oil band plays well with the lifter bore so long as I stay under .600 lift.

Question when installing roller lifters do you need the some call dog bones and spider cage? If so is the 400 drilled for the spider cags I know my 302 (1974 block) is not

IIRC the OEM factory roller set ups are bolted to the blocks (older blocks are probably not drilled and tapped for that) but aftermarket set ups usually have a strap bar looking thing connecting the lifters together so they can work in older blocks (the purpose is to keep the roller lifters from spinning...flat tappet lifters must spin or the cam is wiped out in a few miles...rollers have the roller on the bottom of the lifter so they don't need to spin)

Nothing from the 70s will be drilled for spiders. No 335-series engines were produced from the factory with roller cams, so not going to be drilled for the spider. As Johnny said, some aftermarket systems have a work-around.

I didn't use the spider retainer set up. Those are generally used in the late model 5.0 roller lifters up but the oil bands are generally too high for the Cleveland lifter bores, especially with the beveled top edge of the bore. They can be used but most of what I read indicated that the lifter bores needed sleeved to do it. I wound up using the Lunati linked roller lifters and went with a standard base circle cam.

as far as i know, yes, you would have to drill and tap to have the retainer installed, and also yes, this kit has the "strap bar looking thing" for retaining purposes. when i bought the kit, i was figuring on drilling and tapping the heads so that i could have the roller set in its full purpose and function. i figured that once installed, having a roller cam and timing set was far more superior than that of the traditional flat tappet stock cam set.

you won't need to drill and tap if you use the strap bar style!
drill and tap: factory style^^^ aftermarket strap bar link style ^^^^^ |
