My car is still running the OEM Motorcraft Yellow Top coil.  I'd like to replace it, but from reading online it seems most of the Repro Yellow Tops are junk or for people who don't actually drive their cars.
 
Is there anyway to get a good quality yellow top coil for me car?  Or I am stuck with an aftermarket coil that I will have to paint?  I want a good quality coil that won't leave me stranded, but I prefer to try and keep my car as OEM appearing as possible.

Anyone?  I know there are guys on here who have done factory correct restorations, what are you running for coils?

 
It's not just the colour that's different, the Ford coils have the terminals in a different position than the aftermarket coils. 
 
Does anyone know what the stock resistance is for a factory coil?  I may end up just getting a black one from Pertronix and painting the top.  Pertronix wants to know what the resistance for the stock coil should be to suggest the correct one.

If I remember correctly, it was yellow that he "painted" it, too.

That was a fine looking coil.

I found the following through an internet search on a Ford FE Forum:
 
1.40-1.54 ohms primary @ 75F and 7600-8800 ohms secondary @ 75F
 
Does this sound right for our cars too? 
 
The main reason I am concerned with the coil is I don't want to mess up my factory tach.  So I just want to make sure I don't put too much current through the tach.

I am not saying that the specifications that you posted above are wrong, but usually the specifications for a new replacement factory original type of ignition coil, for your car and engine combination would be close to:
 
Inductance (mH): 6.6
Minimum Primary Resistance Range: 1.50 Ohms
Minimum Secondary Resistance Range: 11,000 Ohms
 
For a few dollars more than the coil listed above, you could get the more expensive/higher quality original equipment type coil with these specifications:
 
Inductance (mH): 6.6
Minimum Primary Resistance Range: 1.50 Ohms
Minimum Secondary Resistance Range: 10,000 Ohms

Hey Dave,
I am not sure if those specs are accurate or not.  What coils are your listed specs from?
 
If that's the case Pertronix makes a coil with 1.5 ohms Primary, 9.0K ohms secondary and 6.4 mH.  So this sounds like it should work for my car?

Alright, I am not that great at all the numbers-if I wanted to buy a coil that would most likely work in my mostly (with the exception of Pertronix unit in the distributor) stock car, where and what what should I buy? I am looking at a NOS coil DGC-13 D27Z-12029-A, but I can see on the coil it says for use with external resistor... I have no clue, and all the talk about messing up the tach, again I have no clue, what can I buy that I can just switch out, monkey see monkey do...

Marc,

if you car still has the resistor wire in place, then it is externally resisted.  Measure the voltage on the positive side of the coil while the car is running, it should be about 8 volts or so if the resistor wire is in place.  If it was been bypassed with will be around 13 volts.
 
Where are you finding NOS yellow tops? I'd be interested?  My only issue is, it's a crap shoot on how well and how long a NOS coil will work.  Failing that, I think you'd be stuck buying a replacement coil and painting the top yellow.  The terminals won't be in the correct location, but only someone looking very closely would notice that.  Apparently Cub Cadet yellow or John Deere yellow are pretty good matches.
