Hi all - new to the forum as I just bought a '79 Cougar.

I am in need of a front license plate bracket, but have been unable to get the right part number to see if any NOS parts suppliers have them, and don't know which cars to look for in the junk yards.  I presume the part will be the same for all 77-79 cougar/tbird/ltd II , but maybe others?  How about '74-76 ?  and what about the Mark V or big fords/mercury cars ? All the photos show a license plate on the driver's side of the bumper.

The guts of the part number would likely be 17A385, but I don't know what prefix I should look for ( D4AZ, D7AZ, D7WZ, etc... and I don't have a parts book handy.

Does anyone know the interchange?  Can anyone look up the part number ?

Thanks very much.

Lou

D7OZ-17A385-A - I have the 73-79 Lincoln/Mercury parts catalog. Nothing older was replaced with that #. That's not to say, others won't work though.

With that being said, I have one a used one for sale. Pretty good shape too. I cleaned it up, sprayed it black.

1.) The front plate bracket from any 1977, 1978 and 1979 cougar, thunderbird, ranchero and LTD II will fit.
2.) The front plate bracket from any 1974, 1975 and 1976 cougar and gran torino (ELITE) should fit as well.
3.) The front plate bracket from any 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976 Montego should fit as well.

You should only search for (and stay with) the plate brackets listed above.

I am not sure if the front plate brackets from a 1974, 1975 and 1976 torino, gran torino (NON-ELITE) and ranchero will fit. They appear to be different than the plate brackets listed above, but they might fit. Maybe one of the other members will know about this...

The plate brackets from the 1973 torino, gran torino and ranchero also appear to be even more different than all of the plate brackets listed above. They might fit and do the job, but i would definetely search for (and stay with) numbers 1.), 2.) and 3.) listed above.

The plate brackets from the 1972 torino, gran torino, ranchero and montego are definetely completely different than all of the brackets listed above. These plate brackets definetely will not fit without doing major modifications such as cutting, drilling, bending and welding.
