Help!  I can't rotate the housing to adjust timing.  I have removed the hold down clamp and bolt completely.  I even banged on a few places to see if would bust loose.  I soaked the area in wintergreen oil.  I removed the vac advance off the housing to gain more clearance.  I took the radiator hose off and removed the coil, to make more room.  I tried a pipe wrench, chain strap wrench and a sink valve plumbers wrench.  No luck.  It's hard to get a good bite and to get leverage.  Looking for ideas and advice.

Fixed.  In the end it was patience and a plumbers basin wrench that worked.  I actually broke one wrench because I was pulling so hard.  Worked it slowly.  Rotated it 1/4 inch one way, 1/4 inch the other way.  Then a 1/2 inch, etc...It was a slow process back and forth.  It didn't bust completely loose like I thought it might.  I had to continue using the wrench, right up to turning it 180 degrees.  But finally after about 30 mins, it really became loose and now I can turn it by hand.

are you comfortable lifting the dizzy out of the engine (and replacing it correctly) ?
.

I'd be worried that if you don't get into that hole & clean it out, the dizzy will re-freeze rather quickly

Can't be a good point, previous owner took out the points and put in a Petronix.Clap

I had contemplated pulling it out, but I thought I better quit while I was ahead.  I've never pulled and put back in a dizzy.  I read that there could be some frustrating points when installing it.  Last thing I need now is another headache (chicken).

some guys fiddle with the oil pump shaft until the dizzy drops by itself & it's still 1 tooth off the first time after a very long time of fiddling. set the timing marks to TDC on the compression stroke using the finger in the spark plug hole method, I just drop it in with the expectation that the rotor will turn a bit due to the gear angle and jump the solenoid with a screwdriver to slightly bump the engine and she drops in. now bring the timing marks back around to line up on the compression stroke again and see that the rotor is pointing where you want it to be which is approx. 12:30 / 1:00 and the vacuum canister pointing forward. yes it may be off a tooth but it's only another 20 seconds to correct it, the whole thing takes less time than I'm typing! save more time by taking a chance not removing a spark plug because it's faster to correct the rotor position by lifting & turning the dizzy 180*. after any correction / re-stab bring the timing marks back around & check orientations Big smile

good news you have Pertronics, what are you gonna set the timing at?

I'd like to start out by setting it to fac spec, and go from there.  What is the setting?  What is your recommendation?

can't see the valve cover sticker from here... what year / motor / trans / etc is it?
my rec would be to try driving it with the timing set at 16* base timing to see if it likes that from a stop and lugging around in the low rpms. find what you like for the base timing then get the distributor 'curved' for that amount and 36* total

in 1971 all 351C's set base timing at 6* BTDC... 2V, 4V & Boss

in 1972;
the 2V (H code, factory 2bbl carb) set base timing at 6* BTDC
the CJ (Q code, factory 4bbl carb) set base timing at 16* BTDC
the HO (R code, factory solid lift cam) set base timing at 10* BTDC

dizzy specs for reference

unfortunately after all these years, even with the number from the side of the dizzy you should really check the calibrations to confirm that internal parts have not been changed or altered. here's what's involved inside the dizzy to achieve the desired results

Thank you very much for your time and wisdom.  Greatly appreciated.  Another off topic question:  I put a post out there looking for a drivers side interior door handle.  There's one on ebay, but I thought I'd ask forum members first before I pull the trigger.  Do you have one?
