Would anyone with a manual be willing to take the time to check on whether or not the dash has to be pulled to remove the steering column? After cleaning and painting the rest of the steering linage and box I can't settle on leaving the rag joint and swivel go with a 43 year coating of rust.

I really have to find that one missing manual.

the double D shaft should retract upwards enough for you to get the rag joint out, not sure if there'd be enough wiggle to remove the DD shaft with the column & steering gear box in place?

you might be able to get the rag joint apart to slide the intermediate shaft off, not sure if there's enough room. but yes the dash cluster will need to come out to access the column nuts/bolts to get the column out Disapprove

Rock, mine doesn't have the steering linkage or steering box on the car at the moment.  I'm waiting on some joint boots yet.

Johnny, anything about the lower half of the dash? The cluster shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

the lower dash is all one entire piece! the column goes in through the cluster opening and is bolted downward to the pedal hanger/steering support bracket, with 4 bolts

I've never taken the column out of the pedal support brackets, I've always removed the steering wheel and the lower dash, then the complete column & pedal support assy in 1 piece
 
so I'm not very familiar with unbolting the clamp that secured the column into the pedal hangar bracket assy
 
too bad Walt Kowalski's not a member, I understand he has knowledge of the steering column architecture in these cars

with the cluster out of the way:
 i just removed the 4 bolts securing the column, and the bolt connecting the intermediate shaft, lift the column upwards a few inches, rotate it a few degrees and carefully slide it out of the dash:
