On the formals 72-73, when the rear window opens, does it roll down completely or just move back a couple inches like the 72-76 Thunderbirds?

On the 72 &73 formal tops they roll down some and then tip back. They do roll all the way out of sight into the quarter.

hello,
has anyone recently heard from the gentlemen or received a pair of his seals? I dont want to bother him if he's backlogged with inquires. Of course I could use a pair too and am considering rebuilding mine with some type of silicone or rubber spray. Question#2: cant recall if there is a gasket that goes under the trunk emblem flapper? yes or no? Comment#1: my qtr windows in my 72 do not go all the way down, maybe 2" inches of the window is still viewable when rolled down. |

NO GASKET UNDER FLIPPER. YOU'LL NEED TO GET IN AND ADJUST THE BOTTOM STOPS FOR THE WINDOW.

I just talked to Dan, he is really busy with his business and that is taking priority. He does not want to venture a guess when he will get back to it.

-Anyone discover a solution for "Pillar Post Quarter Window" Seals? still need a pair for my 72 as mine are just the metal bones.
-Not aware of any repops for any years. -Any success using seals from a later year and trimming? |

There is a good thread floating around about redoing the latch pillar seals.

Ah, thanks. following that post now. thought id have to do some sort of rubber spray technique to recreate the rubber on mine. or maybe build them up with foam, shape them, then rubber spray to seal them. "Flex seal" is available in liquid form.

I am talking to a rubber molding company in NZ here about recreating these seals. Not sure on the cost yet but just gauging interest from members at present...
Have managed to source two set that will be used as donors as they are too brittle to be used on a vehicle Will definitely be getting a set made for my car but if there is enough interest will consider getting a run done Will probably be based on the 74-76 seal as a slot for the 72-73 cars can be cut into them easily enough.... Let me know if you're interested and what you'd be prepared to pay so I can see if it's cost effective Thanks guys Greg |

yes the important thing is to have the metal in it so it keeps its shape and stays mounted to the body and to get a good intact mold from a set, then rework the mold so that the new ones don't have cracks molded into them from the originals i too was going to work on finding a company to take interest in repopping these as almost everybody needs them!!!!

Getting the metal reproduced is the easy part and already sorted..trying to get the setup tooling cost for the mold down is going to be more difficult

greg i'd be interested if they are an exact repop of the originals as well as many many members here and on several facebook sites too i'm sure!
the main thing would be to make a mold off of a perfect pair with the upper edges still intact, then if there are any cracks they would need to be smoothed and reworked in the final molds, so you have a clean new replicas of them with the metal molded in just like original |

Have been making a few enquiries with other rubber molding companies but they're all around NZ$2000 (US 1500) for the tooling of the mold...will be putting it on the back burner for a while as there's more important things to do on the car but will let you guys know when proceeding

How much more for the steel inserts, the actual rubber and molding costs?? 20 sets presold for $100.00 or 30 set at $75.00 and tooling and material is covered?? I'm sure we could easily do that here on the forum.....

Manufacturing costs are relatively cheap...about US$25-30 for the rubber injection part and probably around $10 maximum for the steel insert

if the final cost was $75-100 i think a lot could be sold!!! there's what 2k members here 2k on a fb site, 1.5k on another.... that many members most all of them need these seals!!! even if only 1/2 of all those guys bought them, that's a lot yes some wouldn't sell right away but if they were available and the word got out , they would sell!

We here in the US will also have to figure the import duties/taxes. How much will those and shipping add to the cost?? Wonder if there is a US member with a business thru which a large lot of the seals could be imported and then shipped to members?
Hmmmm......

Wow, someone is actually reproducing the seals - finally. Too bad they won't ship outside the lower 48 though. These guys claim to be restoring Torinos for almost 20 years, I wonder if they know about our site? Here's their story and a couple of pics:
