I am going to be reinstalling my steering box soon (Saginaw with a Ford pump).  I have an aftermarket replacement pressure hose (I think it's a Gates?) for a Torino with a Saginaw steering box and it is WAY too long.  Mind you the stock hose was too long too.  I was looking for a shorter hose to clean up the engine bay.  I was thinking of using a Mustang hose:

Vs the Torino hose I have now:

It's listed as 10" shorter.  But the end that connects to the pump is shaped differently.  Anyone know if this would work?  Or have a better solution?

Also does anyone make a return hose that is similar to stock?  The rubber on mine is getting worn, but I don't want to just use a length of hose and a barb, I'd like to keep it similar to the factory line.

From memory I think the pump end size is 5/8ths NPT but I'd have to check, if you find the steering box size you can then just make up a hose or order one from someone

I bought the new hose I needed for the box and took the old end from the Bronco pump I had to my NAPA store. They make hydraulic hoses, cut the Torino end off and pressed the Bronco end on... PERFECT.
As for the return line... they are just generic PS Hose, also bought at Napa. IF I remember correctly I had them crimp a LONG length on to the gear box fitting that I ran all the way out through the core support to a cooler behind the grill. Then another piece of line back to the pump.

Thanks guys for the information.  We have a few hydraulics places in town, but they all seem to be for industrial equipment.  I called a couple of them and none seem to want anything to do with automotive stuff.  One parts place in town said they can shorten a hose, but they can't reinstall the old end, only one of their fittings.  So in this case the Torino line has hard line then the fitting, and it sounds like they couldn't replicate that.

I may just order the Mustang line and try to fit it.  If it doesn't work, I should be able to return it if I don't actually use any fluid in the line.

Unless someone else has any other ideas?

Its a common size fitting, most hydraulic places use NPT or NPS, just tell them its a hydraulic line you need making up with these ends on it and I'm sure they'll do it

Tell them rubber hose with swaged end fittings

find the NAPA or parts store that does hydraulic hoses.
they are more CAR friendly and do it all the time.
