Hi all, I have a 76 gran Torino. Came with a 351 Windsor . As of now the big 460 is being built. I ordered a set of big block mounts from Dearborn. They look to be quality mounts. The instructions say to drill out where the Mounts go. has anyone ever done this? Any photos would be greatly appreciated. Also soon to be ordering up the six speed manual transmission. I should apologize to all for not posting pictures of the build , I've done quite a bit.

Sounds like those aren't the right mounts if you have to drill a hole, they may "work" but is the engine really located properly in the chassis?

The Dearborn mounts are actually Crites ones with a marked up price

Something's not Kosher with those mounts.
Should be no drilling involved.

These are what Crites/Dearborn mounts are supposed to look like.

I'd just buy the tinman fabrication ones if I was looking to chop out the old engine crossmember
Was looking for a drop in solution when I was building the car though....got bored of the whole fabrication lark

The Crites ones are pretty much the fullsize mounts with the ears cut off bolted to some brackets (the grey parts). All the load is on a small bolt that holds the two together.
Realistically, you could use the fullsize mount by using the frame half of the fullsize mount and weld it to your frame, or attach it to a plate that bolts thru the torino chassis. Not a lot of sense involved in some Ford mounting schemes. They re-invented the wheel over and over. |

I'm not a fan of the 3/8ths gap either side of the ears either....could have made it a lot better on tolerance same with the 1/2" space between the mount and frame top

They were much cruder when they started years ago...
As far as the ear gaps go, 74-up frame is wider, so the mounts are "loose" on the early frames. Cali-Johnny had to cut/weld his 72-73 performance mounts to fit his later frame.

Stock mounts are still around to use, why not use what the factory did?

Well, it's been 20+ years now, but I took a 460 out of a 74 t-bird when I was in high school and it bolted right into my 351w 75 Torino with the stock mounts. Are they not available anymore?

None reproduced, and the donor pool is drying up. Crites is available, but leave something to be desired. Engine doesn't sit the same as factory, which means aftermarket header fitment is off. Crites does make headers to fit their mounts, but they don't fit anything else and they are expen$ive.

They are easy to find, just have to learn to search. lots of people partin the 72-76 t birds and lincoln marks which all had 429 or 460's. I have a line on 3 sets of them which i'll have soon. not as expensive as you'd think either. |

Give me a price on the best set. If they're right then I can produce a few sets which are dimensionally accurate unlike the Crites ones

I am assuming the part numbers you have is for the whole assembly, all three parts together. The parts catalog only lists them individually. However, you could always ask the seller to check the Ford part numbers on each of the parts.

Understand that there are several part #s for the mounts and several for the engine brackets. Later parts books will show the superseding numbers only. Mounts were a D2- part # originally, and they were superseded in 74 as a D4- number. The engine brackets were originally an earlier part used to mount 429 engines into a chassis that used a bracket and insulator to install FE engines. This let them share the insulator in the earlier chassis. This earlier engine bracket does not have the 3-sided well for the bracket-to engine bolts. These were bending, and were redesigned in 73 and have numbers starting with D3. Not sure of the part numbers for the earlier ones, but the set on Ebay has the older right bracket. I believe the originals were to put 429s into Mustangs, but not 100% wether Mustang or Torino. There may be several versions, as Mustang mounted the engines lower in the chassis than Torino. I do know that the full set of FE parts, plus the chassis bracket/knuckle will let you put an FE in a 66-69 Falcon with a little fiddling.

wow great info!! Ya I just found Ford started alphabetical on their parts in the 40’s hence the D for 70-79 which I’m sure you already knew! Thanks for the help. I see a set on Mac auto parts, just not sure if they’d be strong enough for a 500hp 460??
