Guys,
Been years since I built an engine so I want to make sure my memory is correct... when the marks on the timing gear align, it this TDC on the compression stroke? Need to get everything set so I know where I am when I drop in the distributor. THANKS

joe, you have the timing cover off looking at the gears? yes! but the TDC mark on the balancer will line up twice TDC compression stroke and again at TDC exhaust stroke

John, yep cover is off and looking at the gears. As I was turning the crank to align the marks, it blew the paper towel plug out of the #1 spark plus hole across the shop so I figured I hadn't forgotten everything!!
Thanks buddy. |

yep align those marks, without turning it that's the spot to drop in the distributor at your #1 wire location something i like to do is... at TDC make a mark on the top edge of the aluminum part of the dist. (where the cap sits) in the center of the #1 wire tower (usually a light tap using a sharp chisel) now you have a reference to #1 at the distributor when the balancer is at TDC

I also noticed I have a small hole in the timing cover that I think may be a weep hole. It's in a dead passage next to one of the water pump passages. Not sure if it's supposed to be there (it's not a clean round hole) or just a thin spot in the casting I uncovered while blasting it! Irregular shaped and slightly smaller than a pencil eraser....
THANKS

Thanks John, that's what I was thinking too but thought I'd check before filling it in.
