My door tag says I have a "U" transmission - a C6. Was the C6 standard on all wagons? I've read elsewhere that the Montego came with a C4, I'm thinking the wagon might have a C6 as standard issue?

Also, does anyone know what the rated towing capacity is of the 72 Montego wagon with a 351 2V and a C6? There's a 78 F-series for sale with a 4 barrel 351C about 5 hours drive from here. Wondering if the montego would tow it home on a trailer....

I'd definitely be putting in a separate tranny cooler if I was going to start towing stuff.

Some 1972 and 1973 montego station wagons came originally with a C4 transmission. The last year of the C4 transmission in a montego station wagon was 1973. Your car came originally with a C6 transmission.
One of the things that would determine the rated towing capacity of your car is the tow hitch that you have installed on it. There were class A, B and C tow hitches installed on the wagons. The class A had the lowest tow weight capacity and the class B had a higher tow weight capacity than the class A tow hitch. The class C tow hitches had the highest tow weight capacity of all three of them.

Is the F series an F150, F250 or F350?

it's an F150. Pretty sure its not the original motor, the box is done, and one of the frame crossmembers needs work. Still... if the engine is in good shape, I could probably get some $ back once I get the engine out of it.

The last year of the 351C 2V and 4V was 1974, so the engine is not original. I would estimate that the F150 weighs approximately 4,580 pounds (if it is a short bed 4X2) to 4,920 pounds (if it is a long bed 4X4). So it might weigh approximately 380 to 600 pounds more than your station wagon.
Approximately how much does the trailer weigh?

That would be pushing the limits of your wagon. The frames/wheels/tires/suspension were not meant to have that much weight attached back there pulling and pushing. Can you do it? Probably. Is there a chance it will hurt your car? Probably.

I'd pay someone $200-$300 to tow it, as it may well cause more damage to your wagon than that.

sounds like if I'm going to tow it myself, I should buy that F600 first. :-)

Of course this is also considering I have to see it before I even decide to buy it. that's a whole other issue.

i agree with joe! i pull a lot of crap with my old 1/2 ton chevy p/u (more than i shouldEmbarrassedShocked) and it's better suited for towing than a wagon...
hmm.. an old saying comes to mind ... "do as i say, NOT as i do" LOL

My '73 wagon is an original 302/C4 car that was used to tow...the trans blew up 6 years in at 35,000 miles.

I'd verify that it's really what the seller thinks / says it is, as mentioned 351C never came in a truck in North America,
and a lot of people get confused as the valve cover stickers say  Engine Family : Cleveland

the 351M & 400 look very much like the 351C to the untrained eye,
it could be a 351M with a 4bbl manifold on the stock 2V heads

It's a 5 hour drive to go check it out - which I might do on a weekend sometime! or, if i can find a car-enabled person in the area to look at it that could work too. Given where it is that's not all that likely. :-(

some stuff I just read on Wikipedia about the 72 Gran Torino wagon - which presumably holds true for the Montego I'd assume:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Torino#1972

Torino wagons were often used to tow, but all Torino models could be equipped with one of two optional towing packages. A medium-duty trailer package for Class II towing allowed towing up to 3,500 lb (1,600 kg). This package included heavy-duty suspension, the extra-cooling package, trailer towing identification sticker and wiring harness. This option group required the 351-2V or larger engine. A heavy-duty Class III package included heavy-duty suspension, heavy-duty frame (standard on wagons), extra cooling package, heavy-duty battery and alternator, along with a 3.25:1 axle and trailer wiring. This package allowed the Torino to tow up to 6,000 lb (2,700 kg) and required the 400-2V or larger engine and G78-14 or larger tires. Both towing packages listed an automatic transmission, power steering and brakes as mandatory options.
