Hello to the forum!

My first car was a 1973 Sport, fastback with a 302 2V.

I have since owned 2 70 GT's 1 71 GT and a 72 429 4V car.

My latest idea is this....
I found a 72 sportsroof with a seized motor for cheap.
I am considering a 4.6 swap, and possibly a full frame/suspension swap with a 03 or 04 Crown Vic PI.
I know the torino wb is 114.00 and the CV is 114.7
Has anyone on here attempted this?
I really like the CV's and the reliability and performance/mileage that they offer and am interested in putting the underpinnings under the awesome body that is the 72 sportsroof.

Thanks

As long as you can weld and don't mind cutting, you can do pretty much anything.  I agree it's a good idea and hope you work it out....

I am about 99 percent sure that they are pretty much the same vehicle. I know the 78-79 T-birds have the same dimensions as the 72 sport 2 door. I am fairly certain that the same frame and dimensions were used on the 79-91 CV's(box body) as well.
So in other words, the 72 torino lives on in the form of the CVPI.....

Greg-
I have pondered a few things myself, like doing a drivetrain swap but retaining the chassis on the Montego I just got.
Depending on your welding skills, anything can be done.
Easiest thing I could consider is take the crown vic, and cut the body off the floorpan; leave the cowl on the vic, and open up the torino's underside.
It by no means is an easy swap, but something I am debating down the line, just depends on how I feel.
One thing about the front frame section, under the cown, the crown vic's frame sits lower as compared to the Torino, so I am sure it would require some work.
They have a front sump pan for the 4.6 cammer, that I think would work in our chassis.
I alternately considered cutting a 4.6 oil pan off at the rails, turning 180 degrees, and welding back together. the Oil pickup would require some work.

Well, Greg...while I applaud your initiative, I gotta agree with Jim and Andy...unless your welding and fabricating skills are up to snuff, putting a Torino body on a Vic chassis would be a serious undertaking.  Hell, even if you're a certified welder, I think it'd be a major project!  Before I go any further, I've had a bunch of '70s midsize chassis (first one being my Torino in '85), and I've had my '91 Vic since 2000.

Having said that, I'd have to say there's only a passing resemblance between a midsize chassis and a Panther chassis.  I believe you'd need to relocate the body mounting points, and probably install some kind of fuel cell.  Then there's plumbing and wiring...

I do tend to look at the undersides of cars I find interesting at cruise-ins and car shows.  If I saw a Torino with a Watts-linkage rear suspension (albeit an 8.8Confused) and outboard-mounted rear shocks (a la '03-up Panther), I'd HAVE to go talk to the owner!Smile

I for one would be interested in following your progress if you should under take the project. I had thoughts along the same lines myself even with older bodies. Might take one up after the Torino is done,  hmmmm. Might have to until after my daughters car come to think of it.

Pat-
on the body mount issue, from what I have seen on the vic, I don't know if I would consider it a huge differance, but the main thing that I recall is the gas tank location is that like what my '76 Gran Marquis coupe had, behind the rear axle, in front of the trunk floor.
I would be inclined to look at it like this-
Torino/Montego
1-brace body with tube
2-removing the entire floor pan off the Torino, and most likely, the lower half of the cowl.
3-remove the trunk floor, inner wheel tubs.

Crown Vic
1-cut body off of the crown vic, at A pillars at the wind shield, the lower portion of the B pillars, and the C pillar on the roof.
2-trim away quarter panel skins, rear tail light panel, remove trunk lid and bumper cover and inner support
3-remove front clip, except for radiator support. remove bumper cover, and inner support.

The trick is going to be matching the wheelbase correctly for the torino and the CV; by using the entire CV pan, and welding to the torino/montego bodyshell you eliminate the issues of body mounts. the wheel tubs would require work, but at the same point you could minitub them to eliminate the worry about any wheel fitment issues out back.
The front would probably get in my mind some sheetmetal fender liners.
By leaving the top portion of the torino cowl, you still retain factory mount points for the fenders, windshield wiper etc.
I am not sure on the brake booster location, but that should be able to be easily corrected.
I would be inclinded to upgrade to the CVPI booster assembly.

Speaking of which, in locating a donar crown vic, I would be inclinded to locate a state trooper CV, over a standard car, due to the brake package/suspension, but yet retaining the older ford wheel bolt pattern and rim offset. The frame also on the police service cars have reinforced frames, will have factory dual exhaust, upgraded wiring, etc.

The main thing is that will be a tremendous amount of welding involved, but there would be some opportunities to experament also.  Personally, I would prefer to locate a 5.4L 3 valve, or the V10 with a 6 speed.
In an effort to keep things sinple though, the 4.6L or the 5.4 could be converted to run a carb with the MSD DIS ignition setup, and honestly, it's pretty cheap IMO.

Personally though, something about popping a '72-up intermediate hood, and seeing ond of the 5.4 DOHC triton engines, with a pair of carbs backed to a 6 speed, would be awsome.

Very true, lower whine with mine, but I'd still like to hear a little blower whine with mine..  Still looking at 4.6 and 5.4 DOHC motors and KB's for a modern take on a Boss motor look..

(The V10 could be done as well, withb a lot of fabbing on the intake)

I don't know, on the V10-you would have to fab up a sheetmetal intake...my only thing would be making sure the runners would be long enough so it doesn't become some huge lazy dog.
Although, if you think about it, 10 brand new webber carbs on top...or say a pair of big carbs...sounds darn tasty in my book. Smile

Ok, next question, that frame chart appears to be older and not a new gen chart {unless I am wrong, which I probably am off}.
What is the year{s} for that frame chart?
The front frame area apears to be late model, but I just don't know those frames well enough as compared to the Torino without being in person to look them over.
The front section is alot more squared off compared to the Torino though.
Rear portions appear to be about the same.

I was thinking of taking two 5.4 intakes and using the front three cylinders from one and the rear two from another..

Of course a sheetmetal job with two 575 cfm fours rould be very very cool.  Same as 5 two barrels

Built by Ford engineers, was run in the of suspension mods, 4.6 DOHC, blower, etc..   This car was run in the One Lap of America at least once.  Incredible....   Great composure there...

I have seen a couple vids...correct me if I am wrong though, I swore that it still was a FoMoCo owned vehicle, and it went to the crusher?

Anyways, I am going to try to get a bit of dialog between us and the Crown Vic Forum site www.crownvic.net, they have been pretty cool and like the older stuff just as much as their rides. Seen some cool 5 and 6 speed conversions on CV's.

I have a few other ideas...but for now I am trying to concentrait on my GTS.
This is going to be out at least a year for me right now.

I wouldn't sweat the .7" wheelbase difference.. In fact I'd welcome it. On ever 72-79 I've had (4) I always felt the front wheels were set too far towards the rear of the car in the wheel opening.

Heck, is THAT all I'd have to do?  Here's an idea...every active member on the board can donate $100 to a fund, and I'll go find a decent '02-earlier CVPI for dissection and experimentation.  And we can keep it somewhere in westcentral PA under lock and key.

How does that sound? LOL

Ok guys I have returned. I am still hell-bent on doing this! I now have a 2004 CVPI as a daily driver and have spotted a 73GTS about 100 miles south of me. I am going to see if the GTS is for sale and then move forward from there.

Wouldn't it be easier to weld the front of the Crown Vic frame onto a Torino frame then just modify the rear section to fit the rear CVPI suspension.Cutting out floor pans and trying to section firewalls sounds like alot of work that might not work to good.   best to KISS (Keep it Simply Stupid) LOL

you got a plan and got the skills and the funds to do something, you can do anything, my dad thought me that he done things to cars and trucks you would not have thought could be done, of course he was always up to the challenge, if someone told him it could not be done he would just do it to prove a point.

I saw a while back a 66 galaxie 500 for sale on ebay. The seller put a front frame of a 2003 CV,on the 66 ford with the 4.6 litre engine and all the front end up grades that come with it. I uploaded the photos , but I cannot place them on this site. If someone who knows me ,I can email the photos and you can post them here.
