1972 351C 2v engine if it matters.
Talking about the round hole that fits on the carb. I know they are different, but not having a 4v one around I was wondering how much difference, as in could you modify a 2v cleaner to fit on a 4v carb. Will be going with an aftermarket 4v carb (Edelbrock most likely, not a fan of Holley) when I get this back together. I would rather not have to buy a 4v air cleaner, as my plans may include some major hacking on it. Do they still sell the adapters to fit different air cleaners on to different carbs? I haven't played with this stuff since the 1980's or even before. Thanks, Russ Edited by russosborne - 15-May-2017 at 8:00PM |

An Edelbrock carb won't fit under either air cleaner.
If you are set on an Edelbrock and a stock steel air cleaner, look into getting a cheap chrome air cleaner without a drop base and cut out the base of the stock air cleaner and weld the chrome base into the center. It will be an inch or two taller. |

an air cleaner spacer might do the trick if you have the room under the hood to raise it up

I'm planning on putting a stock air cleaner on my 351 cj with a streel demon carb. I've already got a 1 inch air cleaner spacer, so hopefully that will do it.

with an Eddy, the fuel bowls are on the sides, so it's a REALLY wide carb, especially with the A/T linkages.
Short of fabbing/splicing an entire new base plate, you would need an obnoxious sized spacer, and then the drop base is a restriction/disruption to airflow.

Thanks, guys.
Figures that nothing I want to do is simple. Of course the way things are going I may never get back to the Ranchero anyway. Didn't know that they sold spacers like the ones above. This is what I have experience with from the old days, would need them when installing an aftermarket air cleaner. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPECTRE-4952-Air-Cleaner-Carburetor-Spacer-Riser-5-1-8-to-2-barrel-2-5-8-/381869355695?hash=item58e92ff2af:g:sXgAAOSw2xRYP6AV&vxp=mtr Russ |

Oh, so what is/are the differences between a 2v and a 4v air cleaner? Just a label, or are there real differences?
Thanks, Russ |

The only difference is the 4v air cleaner has a vacuum valve and flapper door on the driver's side that opens under load to let more air in. |

The street demon is wide left to right instead of front to back just like an Edelbrock or a Carter carburetor. |

there are Holley type and Carter type Demon carbs, depends which specific Demon carb you're talking abouti don't think it'll take all that much spacer?there's also a banjo fitting for the fuel line that reduces the problem

FWIW, the stock air breather fits my Holley without issue. No spacers or any other mods needed.
