    Posted: 08-June-2017 at 6:15AM
I just got brand new reproduction radiator hoses from Macs auto parts, and they get the hoses from Marti auto works. They look very nice, I also got a stainless spring for small blocks for the lower hose but it doesn't seem to fit very well. Do I really need a spring for the lower hose? It's a stock all original 302 with a little over 53,000 original miles on my 1973 Gran Torino. Does anyone here run the lower hose without a spring? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Apparently they stop the lower hose collapsing at higher rpm......

I went about it a different way, bent a welding rod to the shape then copied it out of stainless 1.5" tube and used rubber couplers either end. Wont collapse now......no matter how hard it tries!

I would leave it.  It is intended to keep the hose from collapsing.  I've heard of folks (not necessarily in our cars) having mysterious cooling issues to find out it was a lower radiator hose collapsing.

It's pretty difficult to put the spring in that I got, it says it's for small blocks from 1965 to 1973 and It doesn't go in very far, only past the wide part on the hose. I tried twisting it but it still doesn't seem to go through the hose.

can you straighten the hose and get in in further?

the short answer is Yes you need something to prevent the lower hose from collapsing

The hose is pretty thick, it doesn't straighten much and I think when I pulled the spring out and tried to move it more through the hose it widened the metal on the spring. I was thinking of using some kind of grease on the spring

tie a string to it and pull/push/twist it through?

you have to turn it the right direction for the spring to coil tighter vs uncoiling Wink

petroleum base lube will soak into the hose Thumbs Down

I'm going to go against the grain here..... I've never installed a lower hose with a spring inside of it in 25+ years and never had an issue.

But...if you are trying to it in there.... I'd suggest spraying the inside of the hose with WD-40. Then take a pair of needle nose pliers and bend the very end of of the spring in so that it can't catch on the rubber hose. then wind it into the hose.

The other thing you can do, is stretch the spring so it's a little smaller in diameter and insert it into the hose. If it's too long, just clip a portion off the end.

I've ran many hoses without the spring but yes it's to keep the hose from sucking shut, i've seen one try to collapse. I've seen many rust apart and get in the pump or even puncture the hose, so one in stainless would be awesome!
yes rotate it the direction to make it coil smaller and yes you'll need to pull it through as you rotate the other end and if you cut it shorter to fit remember to bend the cut end towards the center of the coil so it don't puncture later Wink

The spring is in, and I got the old hoses off. I just replaced both heater hoses, and the top radiator hose. The bottom radiator hose is clamped to the radiator side, but the water pump side slips off whenever I get done tightning it. They are reproduction hoses with the double wire stapled clamps, I can't seem to get the hose to go all the way up on the water pump. It felt tight when I had it on but when I moved it it slipped right off. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I also pushed and twisted the hose but it still slipped off after I tightened the screw

hmm... does the hose fit snug, or is it real loose? it should go on over the pump at least an inch to an inch and a half, the clamp should be in the center of that area about 1/4" from the end of the hose! if it's too far down it could slip off... something sound strange there!

Both hoses are now installed, started the car and don't see any leaks. I'm going to drive it in a few days.
