Does anyone know if the 1972-73 GTS rear interior panel is the same for both formal and fastback? I know the fastback would used a different window felt because of the bigger window, just not sure if the panels themselves would interchange?

I used 72 Torino sport rear panels in my 72 Mercury MX (formal roof) when I added Torino sport front door panels, and they fit just fine. No reason to think they wouldn't work on the formal Gran Torino cousin, but I don't know that with 100% accuracy, of course.

From what i understand the fastback sport rear panels are molded plastic, the formals are vinyl like the rest of tbe cars?

Matt, don't apologize, it's all good. We're all trying to figure it out since no one seems to know for sure. The GTS cars with either fastback or formal roofs came with the plastic molded door panels front and rear. I am just not sure if the formals used a unique panel for the rear or if it was the same panel, but with a different window sweep (shorter for the smaller windows). I can't even find a good pic although a a formal Roof GTS rear interior. All other non-GTS Torino's had the vinyl door panels for 1972-73. Although, there was one member who had a '73 GTS with the '74 style interior and vinyl panels. Although I think that it was a late build.

I found this car online. If you look at the pics you can kind of see the rear panels. This car has the correct sport panels. I can't tell if they are the same because the photos don't show much. http://www.mjcclassiccars.com/1972-ford-gran-torino-sport.shtml

Matt I don't know either was just a question. The last picture is definitely a formal roof car with plastic panels. Can't tell if it is different from a fastback though.

Sail panel might cover up the window difference...
Never seen plastic panels in the rear of a formal, or vinyl in the rear of a fastback.

That's what I was kind of thinking too Randy. Fastback cars never should have had vinyl panels, since all were GTS's. Formals that were GTS's should have had plastic, no GTS formal cars should be vinyl.
