    Posted: 15-October-2017 at 6:07AM
My daily driver truck has a small spot over the rear fenders that is rusting. I cleaned it up and it appears I have a few pin holes.  I want to cut out the effected area and put in a patch - but I don't weld.  I was hoping to use body adhesive.  This is a small area, maybe would require a 2" x 2" at biggest patch.  The surface is perfectly flat.
What is the best way to go about this?  If I glue the metal on top of the existing sheetmetal, won't it be difficult to hide the patch? I might be able to remove the inner fender liner to access the back side of the sheetmetal, but I haven't had time to try that yet.  I know there are a few body guys on here, so I would please appreciate any advise.

vince, placing a patch on the outside will definitely show! back side would be preferred, but you may want to really check the back side if you have pin holes on the outside, the back could be worse! if you don't get rid of it all it will come back!

Thanks John. So, if I can't access that part of the sheetmetal from the back side, I guess there is no way to do a patch with body adhesive?  Would butt welding be the only way to do it?  This is right near the fender edge and I think what happened is the salt and sand built up on the back side of the panel.  It's really small now, but I know if I leave it will spread fast with our salty winter roads.

F150? I have a 91 and I plan on gluing it when it gets there.

That said, if you can see two inches of rust there's more backside that you cant.

Most of the time they rust from behind. I have a random thumb-sized hole in the side of my Sierra about 4" down from the bedrail. It was a tiny bump that looked like a run in the paint till I went thru a carwash.

Alright, sounds like I may have to get behind the fender to do this properly.  If I can't I know a body man who works for cash, but it's a pain to get him to do a job.  Man, I got to learn to weld.

Oh and the truck is not an F-150, it's a Toyota - don't flame me too hard.  Ouch  All the 91 Era F-150's have long since rusted away up here.  Heck, even the 97-2003 generation are starting to thin out.  Damn road salt!

At work we get to see a lot of Canadian cars that get shipped down here for resale. It seems there's money to be made shipping them down here. Three to five years and they have significant rust underneath. I don't know how you guys keep cars together up there any period of time.
