I'm trying to return a 1970 M code Torino GT back to the factory 4 speed, it has been changed to an automatic. I've located an entire 1973 351C\toploader Ranchero car with all the parts and z bar setup I could purchase. Will this work? I think I will need to change the driveline yoke to 31 spline and get a Torino crossmember, steering column, and pedal set. I don't know much about the 72-76 era, but would think the z bar setup should be the same.
Thanks for any input on this before I commit to buying the donor car. |

Yes. Ranchero of this era is based on Torino.

the parts brake down is 1970 & 1971 only.the pedals and z bar.for 1972 and up is the same way.the pedals and z bar only 1972 and up. the trans should work the correct shifter to the year of car.the 1970 crossmember is the same for auto/stck/351 and 429....

I was afraid the z-bar setup would be different. I knew about the pedal set. I could still use the bellhousing back maybe? I would think the clutch fork& shifter could work too.

Yes 1970 was unibody / 72 + went to a frame some parts may be different unless originality is important maybe consider an internal rail trans & hydraulic bearing ? the RUG trans tail housing & shifter mount are likely different also as the 72-73 is a unique oddball don't forget the extra long speedo cable Edited by Rockatansky - 21-October-2017 at 7:15AM |

its easy to do the factory set up.i made my upper rod and lower rod.thay want to much for factory replacement rods.that will wear out if every thing is not straight.the 1970 set up uses all small block parts for the z bar.the felt and the pivot ball on both side of the z bar are from a 302/small block.every place has it

Gutting an original 1973 Ranchero 351CJ/4 speed car would be an absolute shame. Less than 1000 made. I'd buy a separate transmission and separate hardware if possible.

If someone has a reasonable priced RUG Toploader, bellhousing, flywheel, shifter, and clutch fork for a 70/71 I'm game.

Better off retrofitting a hydraulic setup for the clutch anyway.......unless you must have originality for concourse reasons

My son and I are looking for a project. We wanted a 72 Torino/ Montego GT, but we'd be hard pressed to pass up a 4 speed car if it was complete. I have the Top loader(RUG -BG1) from a 72 Torino complete with bell, fork, resurfaced flywheel, and 72 Torino shifter( I'm not sure if that will fit 70-71) |

Thanks, I've had David do work for me in the past. Not ready to spend $2K on a transmission for this project.
Thanks for all the input on this too!
