Hi guys,
before posting this, I have read many many threads about Ford 400 headers for 72 and 73 Torinos. Some people say mustang headers, or different shorty headers for 351c etc. Unfortunately the more I read the less convinced I am that I know what will fit. So the last couple weeks I contacted several custom exhaust shops, mechanics and a speed shop in my area. No one will really help me - they say they don't know what will fit and did not seem eager to help me. They just say, put a 460 in etc. So I'm hoping one of you has successfully put headers of some kind on your ford 400 72 or 73 Torino, they are still obtainable, and that we can learn from you. Anyone know what to buy? Do most people just give up and use manifolds? Thanks in advance for any advice :)

I am going to be buying headers for my 400 soon. The only one I know that will fit for sure are these Hooker Super Comps:
They are pricey though, but there have been a couple people here that have installed them successfully. There are also the Sanderson FC4 shorty headers, that I "think" will fit. I have in the past contacted a fellow who installed them on a 351M (same externally as a 400) in a fullsize Ford. He said there was lots of room with them and the Torinos are similar to these cars. As far as I know any headers listed pre 1972 for Torinos or Mustangs probably won't fit. I have taken some measurements of my stock manifolds and compared them to the FC4 measurements and I am pretty sure they would work. Sanderson says they will take them back if they don't fit. My issue is I live North of the border, so returns are cheap. If I could get these from my local speed shop, I'd try them for sure (since returns are no problem). Keep in mind that you'd also need the 4V to 2V adaptors for these to work on a 400 (they are about $50 extra). I like the quality of the Sanderson, they seem to be better made than the Hookers. Plus they are cheaper and you don't run into the tight fit of long tubes. I still haven't decided what I am going to run, but I will be buying a set sometime between now and spring when I get my 400 back from TMI.

The GTS I purchased about a few years ago had the original engine changed to a 351M with hooker hedders, they fit pretty well.

Were they Hooker 6125 Super Comps? This is probably what I am going to order soon for my car. I hope they fit well for the price.

Other than finding a vintage set of headers, I think you are limited to what I posted above. Now that I have the front clip off my car, I 99% sure am going with the Super Comps for my 400. I am probably going to break the bank and get the ceramic coated headers too, since I want them to last.
Here is a member who installed them on a Ford 400 and he claims they fit okay. Some other searches show that they are tight fit but work okay too. Here is the original thread (you need the photo bucket fix to see the pics): Here's another thread talking about them: |

Thank you for posting this info! These look like Hooker Super Comp 6126 Headers, which are the ones I ordered for my car, so I appreciate the feedback. I will copy you posts info into the header info thread. Thanks again.
