    Posted: 02-March-2018 at 5:42AM
Greetings All,

I'm restoring a 1970 Torino GT 429 w/C-6 and A/C. She is an N code example and I need some expertise identifying the correct carb. From what I have determined (from a few Ford websites) she came from the factory with an Autolite 4300 series carb. I'm not exactly sure what code carb though, because I've come across two different codes; D0OF-E or a D0AF-AM. If anyone can provide some clarity, that would be excellent!

Thanks and have a great weekend all!

Rod

The D0Of-E is a rochester quadra jet spread bore carburetor. It came installed on most 1970 429 CJ engines. It is not an autolite 4300 carburetor.

In the picture below, the D0Of-E carb has a spread bore venturi pattern. Small primary venturies and larger secondary venturies.

The D0AF-AM is a ford autolite-motorcraft 4300a carburetor. It came installed on some 429 n code engines in 1970. It has a square bore venturi pattern, which means that it has similar sized primary and secondary sizes.

There is a picture below of a D0Af-AM square bore carb gasket.

The autolite-motorcraft 4300-A carburetors came with two different primary venturi sizes. A size 1.01" venture was installed on some 1969 351W engines, and some 1970 and 1971 351C 4v engines. The 1.25" venture size carburetors were installed on the 1970 429 n code engines.

There is also the motorcraft 4300D carburetors. They were originally installed on the 1972 through 1974 351C Q code CJ engines. They have a spreadbore throttle bore design.

There is a picture below of the motorcraft 4300D spreadbore design. It is different than the Rochester quadra jet spread bore design.

A seller might be advertising that they have a motorcraft 4300 carburetor for sale, but it might be a motorcraft 4300D carburetor. It can be difficult to find a way to adapt the 4300D carburetor onto a square bore intake manifold. You probably have a square bore throttle bore pattern on your N code intake manifold. There is a picture below of a square bore intake manifold throttle bore pattern.

Thanks for the education Dave!

So aside from the D0OF-E, Rochester quadra jet and the Autolite-Motorcraft 4300-A, D0AF-AM, was there any other carburetors used on the 1970 Torino GT, N code 429, Automatic with A/C that I can continue to search for?

Some early 429s were available with a 2bbl...

The D0OF-E Rochester quadra jet carbs were used on the 1970 C Code 429 cobra jet engines and they were probably also used on the 1970 J Code 429 cobra jet torinos with the ram air option. I have never heard of the ford factory installing them on the 1970 N code 429 engines. There might be an adapter plate that you can use to install the D0OF-E onto your engine. But the Autolite-Motorcraft 4300-A, D0AF-AM would be more of a direct fit onto your intake manifold if you have the 4 barrel square bore pattern on your intake.

opschiefe3537 what intake manifold do you have, if i missed it ?

the Ford Rochester Quadrajet is very rare 1 year only IIRC, the 4300-D is a spreadbore but came later model years, yes there were 2bbls even if Chilton/others don't list the option

if you have a Holley 4150 pattern square bore intake, measure the throttle bores because some Holleys have larger diameter throttle blades and they won't open all the way

http://www.championcarburetor.com/7074-motorcraft-4300a-carburetor-600-cfm-4v-remanufactured-p-10694.html

probably pretty much the same carb you'd get from Rockauto

Thanks for all the help guys!

The build sheet and Marti report show that she was an N code ordered with a 429 4V. She was bucked May 7, 1970 and actually built May 12, 1970.

I'm gonna search for an original 4300-A, D0AF-AM carb.

Question, as I search for a date code correct carb for my Torino, would a Feb to Mar dated carb be correct? I thought I read that engine parts should be dated 60-90 days before the actual build date of the car?

 Have a great weekend.

Rod

I checked the Ford Master Parts catalog.  It lists a bunch of carbs for the 429 Torino's (N-code).

C6 Trans and Imco - D0AF-K, AG, AM, AN

I know my car was build the end of march, most of my engine parts are dated sometime in February.

According to the parts catalog, those are all correct.

There is only two listings in the catalog for the 429 N-code engine. One is for the automatic (as I listed) one is of the 4-speed.  It does not specify with or without A/C in either listing.  The CJ cars used different carbs depending if A/C or not.

rear gear ratio may play into the A/C or not thing, and thus the carb thing

a car spec'd with a performance rear gear may've got a larger venturi carb
