I bought a 70 Torino GT and would like some info and advice on changing over to disc brakes as the drum brakes really suck.

Welcome to the site! There are several old posts using the search function on this topic. Go into advanced search and select the 70/71 forum specific to your car. Here is a link to one of the topics. Hope this helps and good luck with the brake conversion. I've found so many helpful posts here with my 72 GTS build! If you don't see answers to your questions, I am sure somebody on this forum can help!

Welcome to the forum! We'd love to see some pictures of your new Torino. Here are the instructions on how to post a photo if you need them:
There are quite a few options out there for disc brake conversion kits. Here are some from Master Power Brakes: Here are some more at Macs Auto Parts: Good luck! |

If they're like the '65-'73 Mustang, '77-'80 Granada/Monarch/Versailles brakes should bolt up, spindle and all. Plus, the Versailles came with a 9" disc brake rear(read; ultra-rare). They do still pop up in the wrecking yards and Craigslist from time to time, and on Ebay. Good luck!

I fixed your post for you Jim. It might be easier to post one picture per post, then do a new post with another picture, especially if you are using a phone.
The car looks great! Very nice Torino, and it looks to be in great shape.

This 70 Torino GT was sold to me as an 75000 mile actual miles car, but it came from a dealership so it is anybodies guess if it really is, but it is really clean and straight. Brings back alot of memories as I bought a brand new one in June 1970. I love reading posts about all the cars, keep up the good work. Thanks for allowing me on the site. JIM

"77-'80 Granada/Monarch/Versailles rear disk brakes should bolt up"......it will not bolt into a torino 1970/1971.i put them into my cars but you have to cut the spring perches off and move them out or in to make it work.the Granada disks have a bigger hub for the center wheel opening.not all wheels will fit the hubs....

77-'80 Granada hubs have a large hub so the stock steel wheels on your car are 1969 (small hub) will not work....

I did this conversion on My '68 Mustang, I always thought the '70/'71 Torino was the same suspension setup. My bad. As for the hub size, If you convert to disc's with anything other than stock '70/'71 parts, won't you have that issue anyway? Is there a aftermarket repop disc brake setup for these cars? Now I'm interested...

the disk 9 works great in the mustang/cougar with no mods on the 65 to 73.you can not take a 1970 mustang rear end and put it into a 1970 torino.the maverick(later) and Granada use the large center hole in the rims were the torino(68-71) mustang(68-73) use the small center hole in the rims....

If you need advice on converting to disc, you most likely won't have the skills to do it. Because of liability, most shops will want to do it their way, their parts, etc. (read: NO JUNKYARD STUFF!) yes, it's not cheap, but you did plan that in the cost factor when you bought it, right? also get the wheels you will use ahead of time (for custom fitment of brake parts) (you don't want 11 inch rotors if you're going to run 22's) for everyday regular driving, power front discs are fine, but it's only a few bucks more to convert the rear at the same time, maybe another 1k or so. Those were good looking cars. Phred
