Is the box covered in grease/oil? It should have part numbers on it.

Pull it out and go from there. I assume it gave up the ghost and is not working. If it just leaking, rock auto has a kit I would imagine.

ETA: Saginaw is the only kit I found for a 70 on Rock Auto.

IIRC and i could be wrong, they all use the same steering gear box and the power component is the hydraulic assist cylinder

R-A lists LARES 8644
Fits Manual Gear; w/ short input shaft
Or Manual Gear; w/ or w/o linkage type power steering; w/ short input shaft

i'd look to source it locally to avoid shipping the $125 core back, and i'd hold onto the core until you're sure you have a reman that's going to last

getting yours professionally rebuilt is always an option if the swap doesn't work out

Lares Corp only has one steering box listed, 8644.  You can get it from RockAuto.
Here is a page that has all the steering parts for your car from Lares corp, including the power steering cylinders, control valve, pump, etc...

I'd fix the box you have in your car.   To keep the original one with the car.

The power steering box is not that difficult to rebuild, I just recently did it for my 1970 Torino GT Convertible. There is a video on how to do it on YouTube. The video is by Deome's garage. He is French Canadian and speaks in a strong accent, but you can understand him. He is rebuilding a 1967 Mustang Steering box, but the disassembly and assembly procedures are exactly the same.

I rebuilt my power steering box C60R 3550-A from this video and the parts I sourced on Ebay and on the web. This box is the same for power steering and manual steering applications. Since the Torino evolved from the Fairlane, I researched 1966 Fairlane steering gear box parts and found both the upper and lower seals. on ebay. The upper rubber seal is the same as a 1967-1970 Mustang input shaft($6), and the lower grease seal was C70Z-3591-A, also from a Mustang($8), but was NOS.

The needle bearings I sourced from Ebay as well. The serial number was stamped on the bearing and was part number; Kaydon KN 182216. They were $15 dollars each.  The steering worm  bearings were sourced online from the Falcon Enterprises website. The part number was C2AZ-3571-A these were the best prices I could find as Ebay wanted  $65 a bearing, I got mine for $29 each. The falcons used the same bearings in their steering boxes as well, so there was no problems. Some of the these parts may say they are for manual steering , but like I said earlier I found with mine, they are the same for both.

I did not replace the steering block bearings as they were in good shape. I just regreased them. The top gasket can be sourced from a mustang parts company like CJ Pony parts or NPD, but I just bought some gasket paper and cut my own out for $4, which less than the mustang stores, however, if you do not want the home version, the store bought can be bought. The grease was bought from the local Autozone, it is the same grease used for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury applications by Valvoline. Make sure you pack it very well. I found that an entire can was necessary for the rebuild.

The entire project took less that two hours once you have all the parts and the box is cleaned and repainted. The video is very thorough and detailed and was easy to follow. Best of luck to you.
