When I try to tighten the spindle to the lower ball joint on the lower control arm the ball joint spins with the nut. Is there any way to stop this.

put a jack under the control arm and lift.
Some guys will squeeze the ball joint together with the spindle with a big pair of channelocks.

+1, either should work. Just checking, but did you inspect the ball joint to make sure it still good before you button it up?

with the jack near the end of the arm, raise the whole assembly about an inch so the spindle is free if that don't work smack the spindle down ward with a big hammer to get the taper to grip
