Hi All, Glad to be on board. I have a 71 Torino GT convertible 351C 4v auto. Looking for advice on removing the flange casting from the steering column. Lock cylinder is out, turn signal switch out, nuts off tbolts and snap ring off, but flange will not budge. Thanks!

not sure but if it's like the 72-79 columns i think here's a hole for a socket to fit in to remove a bolt for the shift tube IIRC but i believe the upper casting comes off with just the 2 nuts/t-bolts...
maybe someone else here is more familiar with the 70-71's |

Welcome to the forum. I believe the 70-71 column is similar to the 70-73 Mustang column, but it is different from the '72+ Torinos. That said, I think John is on the right path about the T-bolt nuts. Is your car a floor shift or a column shift?
These diagrams might help: This article may be helpful too, it's got lots of great pics: |

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I have a column shift, and have been going by the shop manual. Just took a quick look at the article you shared and will study that closer. Almost seems like there might be some mechanics trick to help remove it.

Sounds good. Let me know if you need anything else. I can dig into the parts catalog for some diagrams to help too. Good luck!

Hey I'm back, still no luck. Possibly the bushing not releasing from the shaft? Tried tapping the shaft lightly while pulling the flange with no result. Really stumped. Any other ideas? Thanks much!

If everything is out like you said, it should slide off. If it's just sticking on the bearing it should only take minimal force to release it. With it in the car it will be harder to try and tap it off. Wouldn't hit the shaft. Wouldn't want to ruin bearing at the bottom, or shaft threads. I would try a ghetto slide hammer setup. I've used rope/string and tied it to a slide hammer so as to not mar the part.
Like I said, if the bolts are out and snap ring off, shouldn't need much force. |

I think Steve is correct on this one. It sounds like you have everything disconnected as it should be, so it must be hanging up on something. You could snap a pic of the column and post it here to make sure you didn't miss something. Otherwise, the slid hammer would probably work well, or rigging up a puller might work too. You could also try reaching out to a steering column specialist for help. Here's one I found through a quick Google search: |

Thanks guys, Steve's idea about the slide hammer gave me an idea to try a steering wheel puller rig. Using it with zip ties, no luck yet and afraid to ruin the bearing if I put too much on it.

that basically looks the same as 72+ IIRC you'll need to take the ignition switch loose so the actuator rod can come off with the upper barrel?...

Remove the Phillips screws at the top and remove the steering wheel lock. There is a spring back there so it might shoot out. That's also connected to ignition switch rod.

Have just continued working it and tapping the shaft. Flange is coming forward slowly, but socket casting seems to be coming with it, which I don't think is supposed to happen. What am I going to damage if I keep going?

Ok, now that it's off I have a couple new questions, big surprise right? Appears there is a broken snap ring on the shaft behind the flange, photo attached. Manual doesn't mention a snap ring there, but am I correct that there should be one? Also, any recommendations for lube/grease for the upper actuator?

Some new grease will make things smooth on assembly.

No snap ring that far in. The only one is behind turn signal switch. It looks like the shaft bearing came apart and left a piece ( race) ceased to the shaft. Should slide off and would explain why it was so hard to disassemble.

another possibility is a c ring. It moves around the shaft in the groove. Ends don't really appear to be broken off. Here's another angle photo. Won't be able to get back to it until the weekend to see if it's a piece off the back of the bearing race.

I see the c clip now. Dosen't look damaged or anything but I have no idea what it's for. Not sure if there is a retainer at the other end of the shaft, but maybe it keeps the(and I'm totally just pulling something out of my) shaft from sliding up into the car.
Just out of curiosity, what are we digging into this thing for? |

I had a new top put on late last fall, but hadn't seen it in the daylight as I had to pick the car up after dark. A couple days later when I could get to it, the weather had turned very cold, 0 F, and when I tried to start the car the ignition was very stiff turning, so bad that I was concerned about breaking something. The only thing that changed since the prior start was the weather, and it felt mechanical, like it was gummed up. Now that the weather is warming up I wanted to take this apart to see if there was something broken. Everything appears to be fine, but as you can see from the photos there's a lot of old grease and grime built up. Hopefully that was the problem, but taking that flange off became a project in itself. Hoping to put everything back together this weekend now that I have it cleaned up. I sure do appreciate all the help you guys are giving me!

ok makes sense now! i like power punch grease myself! but and light grease should be fine also check the lower rod to the ignition switch to see if its rubbing anywhere i've had that happen and it would want to stick between start and run...
