Topic: 1972-73 Tailpipes and Exhaust Tips Posted: 13-July-2019 at 1:34PM |
I am going to have to put new exhaust on my car at some point and I am looking for some ideas for the rear exhaust tips and tail pipe setup. I know the factory went straight out the back with basic round tips. I was thing of either doing that, or maybe slash cut tips. But I am undecided and would like to see some different setups.
If you guys can post some pics of the rear exhaust it would be appreciated. This is what a stock Q-code is supposed to look like: When my car had the stock exhaust (single) it was completely hidden. That old pics above and below is TorinoDave's car which shows the factory exhaust (Q-code) and later when he modified it with it hidden. He's not a forum member, but had this car from new. |

if you ran the tail pipe outside the frame between the frame and the trunk drop offs you could get the pipe up enough to keep it hidden then about 6" from the bottom of the valance throw a 45* bend in the pipe, cut it flush with the valance my vette is like that but about 1" below the valance...

Here is the way I ran mine on the gold '72 Sound great, no fumes in the trunk, no resonance issues, keeps the rear end nice and clean. Barely see them at the lower 1/4 behind the wheel. |

Try to find a pair of 2003-2004 Mercury Marauder exhaust tips. Those look good coming out of the back of ANYTHING.

This is a picture from 1977. I bought these tail pipes from the Ford dealer, or Walker, or Maremont I cannot remember. This is poor quality, but if you look closely perhaps you can see the slight bend of the factory style exhaust tip that essentially points straight out. I love this look but no one makes these anymore. Below is my current GTS with Ford licensed replacement Torino Cobra Jet tips that fit on a 2-1/4" tail pipe. I had these back in the day too and still like them today. I keep them tucked in close so they don't stick out. Those chrome tail pipe clamps are the same parts that I saved from my original car. So are the original Ford tail pipe hangers....but you can't see those! |

Just wanted to bump this thread back up. Anyone else have some exhaust tip pics to share? I am still undecided, and will be getting new exhaust first thing in the spring.
Those of you who run it straight out the back, does it cause any discoloration to the bumper or valence? Feel free to share other details on your exhaust too. |

I pulled these off a low mileage '72 Q code Formal I had. Still have the original clamps and hangers. The ends of the pipes are slant-cut, though, and they look factory.

I have a set of nos tail pipes on my red 73 fastback parts car, still has the stickers on them. They are slant cut and look to be 2".

The parts catalog shows the factory duals with the chrome tips (same as 1970-71 Torino) or the slash cut tail pipes. It shows police cars using the slash cut, but I am sure there were others that didn't have the chrome tips too. All the single exhaust is slash cut, which is what my car had originally. These slash cuts keep the exhaust basically completely hidden.
I am not going for 100% correct, just want a nice look. I am still on the fence between the straight out the back or hidden with slash cut pipes (or something similar). These are OEM style tips: I could get these Stainless Works ones which are similar to OEM: Or I could go with these tips instead of slash cut and have them tucked into the quartes completely hidden: |

I don't have 72-73. On my Starsky & Hutch tribute, since the TV car only had single hidden exhaust, I'm planning on doing full dual exhaust with hidden stainless 2.5" turn-down tips. This way, no question of discoloration to under-carriage, bumper, valance, etc

Joe, can you please show us the tips of those pipes? I'd lke to see if they are slant cut AND formed to direct the flow away from the rear valance. Thanks!

Thank you very much for posting these photos, it is much appreciated! I think I am going do mine like yours and so will print these pics off to show my exhaust guy. Those look like the NOS tips I posted above to me. Really nice Torino BTW!

The 72-73 body is designed in such a way that straight exhaust looks the best to me. Every once in a while I put a coat of wax on the valance by the exit, makes it easy to clean. |

What did you do for rear pipes? are they custom bent, or off the shelf?

I had them made at a local muffler shop; 2.25" in the stock location using stock tail pipe hangers. The chrome tips are from a 70-71 Torino Cobra I believe. I really miss the original design Ford used on the 72-73 dual exhaust tail pipes. Straight out the back, very slight bend down at the end of the tail pipe, and no chrome tip.

I did find a company reproducing the original systems but they will only make original copies.
https://waldronexhaust.com/product/1972-74-ford-mid-size-torino-ranchero-v8-dual-exhaust-w2-mufflers/# I spoke with a lady named Ruth, and she was pretty nice to speak with, but they only do stock restoration systems. 2-1/4" manifolds to mufflers, and the tail pipes are 2" diameter. Made mention they source hangers from an outfit called "ICP" however I find no online reference to an exhaust supplier with that name. Also, sorry Vince, I just realized I was posting on this thread from 2019. |

I just remembered this subject of an exhaust business in NY, who made excellent parts for the Lincoln Mark VII's. A few forum members loved the 2.25" systems, and they made 2.5" tailpipes also. But the name I'm not sure of, it is in thelincolnmarkviiclub.org forum somewhere. My guess is Exhaust Unlimited or a similar two word name. They were high I do recall, and that was 5-10 years back. I'll be aiming for a 2.5" dual exhaust for my two Q-code trucks, that should be fine for both of them. I like the Borla tips a lot, I browsed Summit again today. The slant cut intercooled tips are my favorite, the version that has 2.5" high and 2.75" wide outlet ends. That's made for both 2.25" pipes, and 2.5" pipes. They have one that has a bigger opening but looks the same as pictured, 3" x 3 3/8" opening and about 9" long. All of those unfortunately are about $90, which used to be near $60 when I bought two many years ago. Here's a link to that bigger one, $84.99 it is now; https://www.summitracing.com/parts/bor-20132

Hey Vince, do we have a sticky thread specifically for exhausts? Doing some research on Waldron's offerings and they actually list out a fair amount of stuff they reproduce to match OEM Ford torino stuff.

I'll second the Waldron's Exhaust recommendation. I have worked with Ruth and others numerous times, they are great to work with.
Joe Wright used the complete kit with Waldron's Impostor mufflers on the S&H Season 2-4 Hero 1 Torino, it had all the correct factory bends and cats. He also used the same kit on his personal clone of the same TV car. They did not have a kit for my Torino as I am not putting in cats However I still purchased a pair of the Impostor mufflers and also have a pair of 9" glass packs on the way. They also have a Mild Impostor muffler, which is meant to be a bit quieter. You can look up different examples on YouTube of customers who have installed their products to see if it's close enough to what you want. Everything is made to order - diameter of pipes, inlet/outlet; location of inlet/outlet, center or off-center. I opted to go stainless steal, however you can also order aluminized steel for a bit cheaper. One thing to keep in mind - since everything is custom made to order, lead time on mufflers is 8-12 weeks. Simpler items like glass packs are a bit shorter lead time. But anything worth having is worth waiting for, you will not be disappointed https://waldronexhaust.com/

I too had a Waldrons system installed on my '69 and was happy with the fit and sound of the mild imposters. It sits up high so not visible from the side except for the side reveal. I added generic Summit tips for the look. Small block/390 duals were behind the wheels whereas 428's were under bumper.
