I was thinking that, new boots didn't seem to have anything like this so that's what had me second guessing it. Maybe some random type of boot fitted god-knows-when and where...

Pretty sure the little grippers should be part of the boot itself, not the joint.
It's a little retaining/stiffening ring on the top of the boot;

Weird. Must be some aftermarket style. I'll just find a way to pull them off and fit standard covers.

Thanks as always for the help.

i don't recall ever seeing any cars with those little grippers before? you probably don't need them? usually the boot just sits over the end of the joint to keep dirt out. the grease comes up through inside, the excess oozes out under the boot...

thanks guys - it’s just getting the remains of rubber out from under those little grippers that I don’t get, am I supposed to bend each of those back to pull the remains of the rubber out?

Or am I missing something more fundamental... feels like this shouldn’t be this hard?!

look closely at your pic... in the 12 o'clock position look close you see that arched notch? now look where it meets the joint... that one has a bunch of little grippers around the joint, just get between that and the joint and pry the remnants of the boot off Wink
 some may have a groove like greg stated for the new ones??? or if you're using the energysuspesion boots, those just slip over the stud Wink

They don't have to come apart to replace the rubber.
Take a pick and run it under the edge of the rubber boot on the bottom where it meats the ball joint.
The boot fits in a grove cut into the top of the joint.
Take the new boot and slide it unto the grove and it will slide on. Double check that it is in the channel all the way around and install it.

OK, so I’m trying to replace the dust covers on the tie rod ends. Seems nice and easy until I get to the perished rubber dust covers themselves, the remains of which seem to be held in place by the tie rod assembly - see photo.

Am I missing something? Just can’t work out how this is supposed to come apart?!
