Are the 72 and 78 frames the same? I saw a 78 frame and it did not look quite like mine in the problem area around where the rear lower control arm mounts......

Yes, the '72 and '78 frames are the same in the area your are rusted. The frame basically was the same from '72 to '79. However, in front of the front axle and behind the rear axle was altered depending on the year.

so you could swap the front & rear bumper mount extensions (frame horns) from the 72 frame to any other same wheelbase frame and it will work. wheelbase can be adjusted by sectioning the middle, paying attention to body mount locations. do you have a line on a donor frame local? |

Certain sections are the same.
I have sectioned out the lower rear control arm pockets in the past, and I've found it is best to cut the entire frame section ahead of the splice joint of the rear frame to side frame section. cut the rear frame rail above the lower control arm pocket and send the entire donor section, to allow the person repairing the frame plenty of metal. when welding in, care must be taken to do 45 degree bevel grinds to allow for additional weld penetration and confirm the welds are good and not full of impurities. because this is an area that is critical to the operation of the car, if you are not confident in your welding skills, seek out a certified welder with proper equipment to repair. after repairs, take care to use an encapsulator product inside the repaired frame rail sections to reduce potential rust issues. Also, this goes without saying, but remove your fuel tank while grinding and welding on that area of the vehicle. all it takes is a nearly empty fuel tank, and fumes and some sparks to create a very bad scenario.

i cut that out with the fuel line intact... just pulled it out of the way, but i don't recommend it!! that's only for skilled individuals like myself
note the smaller frame section in the front... i'd grind the welds to remove the inner piece, grind yours off saving the smaller side section of yours intact so this can be slid into place then rewelded as the factory did but andy is correct about "V" ing the butt joints for the upper graft |
