Hi guys!--
I be this topic has come up many times before so if you know an old link you can refer me to, I'd appreciate it! But I wanted to find out any particuulars to putting in a 460 into my 78 Tbird. I have a 460 and C6 from a big old '75 Grand Marquis. Is the C6 from the Marquis too long? It would be great to go with an O/D trans, but I hear then you're talking about modifying the floor tunnel, etc-----I would like to keep this as bolt-on as possible! Any tips would be appreciated, thanks! Glenn in Detroit |

The C-6 should be same one as used in torino body,it's sam e chassis. You just have to check driveshaft length,as I'm not sure if Marquis wheelbase is longer,it might be.It will fit,but you need all the usual swap parts, motor mounts, exhaust, belt driven accessories amd maybe different shifter linkage depending on floor or column shift, but it is all bolt in swap.An O/D tranny wouldn't work behind a big block.I did one on my small block and it just fit.The BB one is way larger the a small block O/D.

Thanks for the reply! I figured an O/D trans would be too big--- even if I wanted to go to the trouble to adapt an AOD to it, I'd likely blow it up!
Thanks again! |

They make AOD adapter plates, etc. I'd love to do mine in my truck.
Also, the marquis might use the "LONG" C6. Be careful, you'll need to make up some mounting points on the frame for it. As for the engine, my 460 fits in my 78 Cougar and except for headers and dress up parts, it looks like a factory install. |

Great to hear it should not take too much "creativity" to do the 460! Thanks. Yes, I bet I'll have to find a shorter C6, the Marquis one looks long! Maybe I can change the length by getting a shorter output shaft and tail housing- I'll check on the net for some more info, unless someone out there knows! Thanks all!

I bolted a C-6 out of a '73 429 LTD station wagon into my Torino with zero fitment issues. This doesn't guarantee that the tranny that you have will fit, Glenn...but I, too, think the midsize and fullsize cars used the same transmission.

Sounds encouraging, thanks for writing Pat!
Now when the guy who sold me the 460 from the Marquis took it out, he gave me the mounts too from the engine-- is there a mating piece on the car body crossmember that I need to change? I haven't really checked it out myself, it's so cold here and too lazy to freeze outside to find out! Take care! |

Fullsize and midsize motor mounts are completely different...you'd be ahead of the game to order yourself a set of aftermarket mounts. Where you'd go for those, I don't know, but I'd bet Dearborn Classics would be as good a place as any to start.
When I did my 460 conversion (originally in an LTD II), I got the mounts from Ford for $110...but that was 14 years ago!
Oh!!! And you might find that the manual shift lever on the side of the transmission will be different, since the fullsize cars used a linkage and the midsize cars used a cable. You might be able to modify the lever with some creative bracket work, but BE CAREFUL! Ford trannies back in those days were notorious for slipping out of gear in the first place...I've got a junked right knee because of a half-assed, home-made shift lever bracket.

Hello the full size fords and torinos use the same C6 transmission. If your car has a FMX transmission you will need a different drive shaft The C6 from full size cars use a linkage type shifter .The torinos use cable type link shifter. If you cannot find a 460 drive shaft for your car.Do not worry Look for 400 cid equiped car of the same chassis type. They have a C6 transmission and the drive shaft you will need.Check for the code on the drivers door or on the pillar for transmission code U.

Thanks! The car is currently the 302 with C4. I will look for a TBird with the 400 to get a driveshaft from, as well as the C6 cable style linkage-- thanks again!

I put a 460 / C6 combo from Dads 1974 LTD into my old 1976 Gran Torino (351W / FMX)...motor mounts were a junkyard item from a 1975 T-Bird....engine "cradle" frame is identical to Torino. I had to have the driveshaft cut down and rebalanced (about 4-5 inches if I remember correctly) but the combo fit nicely.....had to "re-do" the shift lever on the trans....but man that was a fun car....but that was over twenty years ago...and a lifetime away.....
Now, I just got a 1976 Montego MX with a 351W / C4 combo...as much as I want to do that again.....I remember the extra weight the 460 / C6 put into the front end of the Torino so I think, this time....I'll leave her be..... Edited by twintornados - 24-April-2009 at 2:15AM |

Thanks for the note! I just got some mounts off a Mark V, same cradle as that 75 Tbird as you likely know. The best setup would be the C6 and maybe one of those Gear Vendors Overdrives, but they are pricey...................!

You could always do a wide ratio C6 and a lower (numerically) rear axle...

No.. But, you can use the E4OD gearset in the C6 which will give a higher (numerically) first and second gear.. Leaving 3rd as a 1:1.
