I ordered a master cylinder through Summit, a Dorman M80903.  Their site shows it fitting my car, 1973 Ford Gran Torino Sport with a 7 liter.  Prior to putting it on I checked Summits site and it still showed fitting my car.  However when I checked Dormans site it didn't list it as fitting, but it does show it fitting a 1973 Montego.  I even emailed Dormans help site and they stated it isn't listed as fitting the Torino.  Cross referencing with the original Ford part number shows it to be the same.  Wouldn't the Montego and Torino use the same master cylinder?  I'm thinking this is just a listing problem on Dormans site.

I just went over to the O'Reilly's site. They list the same master cylinder for both the Gran Torino Sport and the Mercury Montego. I've ordered a new vacuum booster and master cylinder for my '76.

It is the same between Montego and Torino.  There are separate listings for Manual and Power brakes.  On the power brakes, there is a different part listing for 1972 compared to 1973-79.

Ford Part numbers are as follows:

1972

D2OZ 2140-A (manual brakes)
D2OZ 2140-B (power brakes)

the only difference might be the inclusion of the push rod.

1973-79

D2OZ 2140-A superseded by D4OZ 2140-A  (manual brakes)
D6AZ 2140-A (power brakes)

Doorman has two listings that I find for the '72-79 Torinos.

M98908 cross references to  D2OZ 2140-A, D2OZ 2140-B, D9AZ 2140-A

M80903 for 1973 and newer cross references  D30Z 2140-A, D3AZ 2140-A, D6OZ 2140-A, D6AZ 2140-A

So in short, you ordered the correct one for your car.  FWIW, I used a doorman Master Cylinder on my car and so far it works fine.  This was after a Cardone bit the dust.

Vince, thanks for the additional info, glad it's the right one, and John, I know what you mean, there's only one or two places I go locally when I need advice on a part, gotten too much bad info from alot of the clerks.

I just learned the hard way that a 1973 Torino power brake master cylinder has a 9/16” port to the front discs, and a manual brake master cylinder has a 1/2” port to the front. Of course the parts store had ordered the wrong one for me. Minor interruption in my late Sunday evening project

As far as I know, 1972 boosters are no longer available. You have to source a used one or use a later year booster. There are rebuild services you find a rebuildable core.

I used this outfit a few years ago:

I used them because somewhere in the process "somebody" told me it was "illegal to rebuild" a master cylinder in this crazy state.  The source had always been reliable but.....

Hate to revive an old problem I thought I had taken care of but I have another question on the master cylinder. I'm finishing up the brake system rebuild and when I tried connecting the lines from the master cylinder to the proportioning valve I found the cylinder had two different size ports but the fittings on the lines from inline tube were both the same (fit the smaller port). Do 73 Torinos have different size ports on the cylinder or did inline tube put the wrong fitting on?

There should be two different port sizes.

9/16 x 18 and 1/2 x 20

The problem was the tubes from Inline, they both had a 1/2 inch fitting on them, took it to a local shop and they put a 9/16 fitting on it, I'm all set now, thanks.
