Ive been attempting to build a weekend fun car for a while now , but the gearing and stock converter makes it a bit difficult to burn the tires with the power i currently have. However, I am looking to swapping out the original ford 8 inch (2.73 gears?? Its slow). Im looking to get an 8.8 or 9 inch with some shorter gears , but i have no idea where to look and what cars came with the same width axles (or even how to measure the width). So im trying to spend as little money as possible, and im wondering if it would even be worth the cost and effort of finding a new rear end or just upgrading the current 8 inch to 4.11s and a mini spool. Any help is appreciated, thanks |

70-71 torino's and rancheros would be the same maybe mustangs of those years??? idk you'd have to measure ...
you could do the 8" with a limited slip carrier that will spread the load across both axles and not just the one that way you'd only need to swap the center carrier or a 9" from the same vehicles will be even stronger... but you'll need the whole 9" rearend to swap in |

Thanks.
Ive come to the conclusion that Im just going to end up rebuilding the 8 inch. I dont think im going to make enough power for a while to blow it up anyway. Anyone know if a press is required to replace the ring and pinon on these? Would rather do it myself at home if possible

The carrier side bearings and the main pinion bearing can be removed with a gear puller, but need to be pressed back into place. Some folks tell me you can put the carrier/pinion in the freezer overnight, then heat the bearing on a hot plate and it drops into place with just light hammer taps but i have not done this. A press makes this much easier, if you can find a buddy who has one you will be much happier. Search you tube for some vids. I have used a bottle jack under a tractor drawbar but it's best reserved for emergency stuff...
In my defence, I had little money, and live out in the sticks... Good luck! Ron
