His Track Boss blocks use the small-block bolt pattern. He doesn't make any 400 blocks, they are all 351C.  My block and heads are original to my car, and it has the big block pattern.

There were 400s made with the bosses/webs for both patterns. Many of those blocks were only drilled for the big bell. Some of those blocks also have the bosses for the small block ford mounts.
Some have only one side, and I've never seen them drilled from the factory.

Hi Allen

Welcome to the forum. Great looking LTD that you have. I use to have a 72 LTD convertible. I owned it for 14 years and went through everything to make it a reliable driver. It also had a 400. Good Luck

I have a '72 400 and it's only the large big block bell housing pattern, like the vast majority of 400s.  From what I have read over the years, it's the 1973 400s used in full size cars with FMX transmissions that had the small-bock bell housing pattern. Regardless, they are rare.

I need to take a picture of my bare 400 block, I know it's the large pattern. The regular 400 block doesn't have both of those mounting pattern bosses in it. I wish they had kept making the original one like that, with both patterns possible.

To check for Windsor/ Cleveland bolt pattern, measure the width of the top two bolt holes. The W/C pattern is 5 inches, the common 351M/400 pattern is 7  3/4 inches wide. The 429-460 engines also have the wide 7 3/4 pattern.  The attached image is from Fordification.com that outlines the two patterns.  J.

Didn't the block pictured have both patterns?

A quick check of the casting number above the starter will give you the info as well.

That's a great thought. The small block 400's were super rare. A 400 isn't popular, but people who do like them would appreciate the small block version.

Check the transmission, the big block pattern trans has a larger mounting pattern. It's hard to tell unless you are familiar with both sizes. I think the top two bolt locations tell the biggest difference, the two on a big block pattern will be higher up. I have one picture of a small pattern 400. See below, there is a gap from the rear top edge of the block, down to the two top bolts of the trans;

How do you check for that.

A few products to share that I have discovered so far on this journey with Bobby the LTD.
For vinyl tops the only thing I found that worked to bring back my vinyl top is NU Vinyl.  It was washed all the way out almost grey this brought back the original green color.  I tested everything available and the even some homemade fixes.  Nothing worked as good.  3 month into applying still looking good.

Now this may sound crazy but instead of paying for that clay bar kit.  Leave it alone.  I used Plumbers putty and a 50/50 mixture of Dawn and water for lubricant.  Came out awesome.  It worked just as good if not better than the Mothers clay kit.  The only reason I know is to my cousin and I tried the Mothers first when I first got the car.  Was still rough so I tried this method.  Came out clean.  The putty breaks down with the soap combo as lubricant.  But for the 1.97 that the putty cost no problem.
Thank you very much.

One repair (work around) had to be done.
Had to bypass the heater core.  Will eventually change the thing but for now...
Thank you very much.

Cleaned entire car.

Painted frame rails and exhaust flat black high temp paint.  Cannot stand it when that exhaust has the rusted look.  Easy fix high temp bbq paint  Wheel wells also have to get the flat black.  Not undercoating just to much over the top.  3 .98 cent cans of flat black paint from Home Depot and a square of cardboard (to mask other areas you don't want painted) always does the trick.

Gives it that nice clean tight look.

**Oh and that's what you do when your broke.  Ha Ha fake it til you make it.

Rims painted gloss black.

Thank you so much.

Apologies for the late reply.

Getting back to it after long week of home school with granddaughter.

Headed to uncles house today to do some investigating and work.

Going to pick up some basic shocks for the rear to stabilize a bit until we decide what to do with lowering etc.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Allen
Thank you very much.

Yes, we have a 1972 wiring diagram that covers all Fords, not just Torinos.  It's posted in this section with most of the other reference material:

Just look for the wiring diagram thread and you can download it from their.

That looks great. It even has the original hub caps, and the nice side moldings I liked the best.

Keep an eye out for those upper thin moldings, I've wanted to find those from a Ranchero, and that was a rare item few people bought.
