Hi guys,
My steering wheel is cracked, and the large diameter wheel makes the car a bit harder to get into with my racing buckets. I think a smaller diameter wheel might be a good move to make the steering feel a bit more responsive, although I'm fairly certain the power steering might be more of the culprit. Summit suggests a Grant 1902 based on my model/year, but I imagine anything would fit. What's everyone got?

I use this exact wheel on mine, 13" version. Still have the GT horn button, been there for almost 30 years. Jeesh I'm getting old.

I can't comment on the aftermarket wheel, but if you want to improve the steering feel, you need a new steering box. There are two options, a Lares quick ratio, or swapping to a Saginaw steering box.

Awesome! I'll look into that PS swap as well, that would be a great addition.

I am currently swapping to a Saginaw quick-ratio box in my '76 Ranchero (the original is a two-bolt Ford), is a different pitman arm also required?

I don't know what new issues or details have been found since I did my conversion, in 1988. I bought a Saginaw steering box from a 71-73 Mustang, and sent it off to be rebuilt by the same builder doing NASCAR boxes. I don't think there is any difference in the pitman arm, I used a new one for my 72 Ranchero then. I learned by phone then that lots of OEM cars had compatible Saginaw boxes in them. In the 80s' a Trans Am was a more common car to find than the 71-73 Mustang, I'd have hunted one of those if I knew before the Mustang I found. The first thing to look for was the number of bolts on the cover visible from directly above. The two bolt type are not a Saginaw box for sure, those all have four cover bolts, that can work. That's all I recall learning back then.

I used one from a 1976 Mustang ll. The Maverick, Pinto and Bronco all used this steering wheel as an option.

Looks like you need a tilt column.

That is a tilt column! I had to use that angle to get a decent shot of the steering wheel

Grant Wheels 9660. It's 15" and combined with my Lares quick ratio steering box works well. It also has enough dish that it doesn't cause your fingers to interfere with the turn signal stalk or the ignition switch. As a bonus; my car is built as period-ish hot rod, so it matches the style of the car.

I think that's the steering wheel I have in my old 73, but the spokes were a little rusty when I got the truck. It's a very good looking wheel, mine I was thinking of coating the spokes in black, back in the late 80's.
