More issues (small, but slightly annoying)
Car was advertised as having a trac lok diff. One Smokey wheel suggests otherwise. Either it's well worn out, or it's open. I'd say open, as I can turn one wheel while the other is chocked, and turning the prop results in one wheel turning. Sometimes when turning one wheel, they go the same direction, other times different directions So, I think I'd like to buy a locking diff of some description. Example of what I'd buy from just looking around and budget. Or preferably this version Any advice on whats a good choice? Car has a measured 411 at the wheels, C6, 3.5 gears and 275/60/15 tyres (around 28 inches). Thanks, Iain. |

That Speedmaster differential sounds interesting, I think it might be a China knock off parts source though. I am not sure, it just sounds familiar to recent other parts(not a diff) I've run across from a similar maker. A Detroit True Trac is the most popular standard tough torque sensing diff. I have an 8.8 to put in my SUV soon, the 9" version was not far off in price, maybe $550. That one linked above would be a cheap cost torque sensing diff, at $325.

i wouldn't touch either of them with a 10' pole never heard of Durasolid, and Speedmaster ... no! Yukon is as far down into the barrel i'm willing to go, competitively priced and nobody knocks them AFAIK Edited by Rockatansky - 23-September-2020 at 1:58PM |

Well said. I have been a lot of years out of buying many serious parts like diff's. There are lots of new manufacturers now versus 20 years ago, and most are bad choices. There's another brand called Detroit Gear I think, very close if not, which makes lots of garbage parts. They choose a name for their brand that they figure enough unknowing people will accept. Dorman is a poor brand for example, they do make a tons of parts, and many nobody else does. So you want to avoid them, but lots of parts they are the only choice. For an obsolete part it's tough, some are worth trying anything. But the differential, we have many good choices for that. It's a part you likely won't get lucky with a cheap brand part for long. Most good brand basic LS diff's, run around $250, the really good types are $500 or so. I think that's similar for both an 8.8 and the 9".

Will get an install kit too of some description, but am again unsure of carrier bearing sizes, as there appears to be several. Bit annoying as I'd rather buy stuff, then fit it rather than taking things apart to see what I need. OK if I lived in the US, but I will have postal delays over here and a dismantled car for a while!
The yukon seems a good price, but I see it's just the case which needs splitting for the gears. I'll keep looking, and see what comes up. (and if I can minimise import charges too, a deal killer!

Not to say it's the best choice, but you might try to find a whole chunk as you want it, to buy and ship. The cost to rebuild one plus the diff, might be similar to shipping a whole one, I don't know what the huge weight would cost. I hate shipping costs, it's a big part of purchase pricing. But if it's not ridiculous, maybe someone has a chunk they'd sell. I have a 4.11 that I will have to re-gear likely to 3.50:1, but I don't have a spare. My best friend might have a spare 9" rear, but it would be stock and who knows if it's LS or not.

If you can turn one wheel, and the other goes in the same direction, you probably have a worn-out limited slip. (Or, the side gears are shimmed too tight)
